Three year old rechargeable batteries will indeed not do as well as fresh ones. Probably just time to buy a new set.
Luckily I bought two sets of eight Eneloops each - 2000 mAh with interesting glitter covers - to back up the two sets of four - the usual off-white covers - which I was interchanging on the K200D. If the glitter sets do all right then your explanation is the right one. If not, then I suppose it is the end of the road for this K200D. Many thanks.

I used the glitter Eneloops for eleven days with the camera showing batteries at full power. At the end of the 11th day the camera showed batteries at half power. When the camera was shut on and off a few times it returned to indicating full power for a while and then showed no power at all. It seems as if the camera circuits are showing their age. The glitter Eneloops were bought in Romania in end-2010 and mid 2011. Not more than thirty frames could have been shot with them in those eleven days. Any comments?

I recharged the glitter Eneloops batteries and installed them again in the K200D. I checked the auto power off setting and found it was at 30 minutes. That was reset to the minimum. I have now reached 21 days without diminution of power. As earlier, the camera was used only for test shots.

While I am waiting and watching, I owe it to Marc Sabatella and K200D users to post the above.

Classic symptoms of leaky capacitors. The longer they receive power, the worse they leak. It happens, especially these days with tiny surface mount ones.
