Forgive me if I am wrong about this, but what if the sensor was mounted in the lenses (i thought i had heard about this)? couldn't then those sensors be shaped and individualized for the focal length of the lens (putting aside the cost calculations other have mentioned).

Yes. But still does not work well with zoom lenses.

Can't just "putting aside the cost calculations." It's technically possible. But currently, not financially feasible.

And then ultimately, at least for now, the image will be view on a flat surface.
