Funny place to ask, I know

Which would you buy now (new): Pentax K5 or Nikon D7000 ?

And why?

K5

It is still the best camera in its class.

What do you plan to do with it? There are applications for which the D7000 is superior. If its general use, the K-5. However, if it's for specific use in something like high speed sports, working with a group that already has Nikon equipment you could share, etc. then the 7000 makes more sense.

I just made this decision and went with the K-5. I know that with the Nikon, I would have had better AF in the dark, plus smaller points. Not to mention, Nikon actually has fast wide-angle lenses, which Pentax lacks.

What the Pentax has over the Nikon: cleaner high ISO output, particularly above ISO6400 (I shoot concerts at 10,000). Pixel Mapping, dust reduction, slightly sharper output, smaller body.

Edit: forgot about IBIS with Pentax. That's a big deal. Not to mention, I am regularly using an M85 F2, and while there are certain drawbacks using manual lenses, the Pentax has pretty stellar legacy lens support and functionality.

Can you even get a D7000 now? In the spring they were in very short supply.

Asking this question on a Pentax centric website is not very representative.

Pentax K-5 wins hands down.

But I'd get the K-5II.

The OP acknowledged that in the title, plus I bet he'll get more diverse answers here than he would on a Nikon forum.

Nikon makes good stuff. My cousin is a hard-core Nikon guy. I will stick with Pentax because I have a limited budget due to having kids and this is a hobby.
You need to choose the tool that most fits your needs.

Why get the K-5 over 7K: PIXEL MAPPING! Or did it get fixed by Nikon?.
