I remember someone making a wooden grip for the K-x, or K-m. That had no funcionality either but at least it was the right size and for horizontal shooting it would make the camera more comfortable.

The answer is, of course, for Pentax to make their lower-end cameras available with grips, which Pentax would sell, thereby making profits. I'm fairly sure that's how capitalism works.
