indeed, alternatives are provided, but the metering is damn not accurate at all with this. when i use some K mount lens, the stop down metering always give around +3/4 EV more than it really need.
And it meters this way consistently so you just adjust for it accordingly either change the aperture or shutter speed. This is how photography has always worked.

a few pages back i posted the performance of several cameras, specifically *istD, K10D, K10D with *istD focusing screen, K7D and K5D with manual aperture lenses.

some cameras (K10D and K7D) are much worse than others in manual aperture stopped down metering. this is one area where a de crippled mount could help, but to take out all the variations, you would also need to either enter the maximum aperture when you start (just like focal length) or apply for each different lens (or specifically maximum aperture) an exposure compensation value.

as many said before, if one of your main selling points is great backward lens compatibility, why the hell do you cripple it ?

I have a number of K & M lenses, so count me in as well, for both de-crippling the K-mount and restoring TTL.

I've long, long wished that Pentax would de-cripple the K mount. I would buy a new Pentax dSLR merely to have this feature.

I'd like to have a full featured KAF2 mount, too.
This helps me to convince people to buy Pentax cameras.

Why is it important to you that others buy Pentax cameras ?

Just wondering. I think some of the responses in this thread fall in to two categories.

a.) I would like my choice of Pentax to be justifiable to others, so it must have features comparable to, or better, than other camera choices. I am not secure in my own purchasing choices without the validation of others, be it via reviews or friends. I want to be able to say I have the best camera on the block, not the best photos.

b. ) I have old lenses and believe ( erroneously, largely ) that my ability to take great photos using them would be improved if only Pentax provided me with an aperture-feeler on their DSLR bodies. Although I am choosing to use 5-decade old manual focus lenses, I am unable or unwilling to compose and then move the aperture ring. Pentax are preventing me from being a better photographer by deliberately omitting a feature that is of marginal utility ( Pentax metering is pretty bad, even on current lenses... ) to a very minor subsection of Pentax users.

Really, I think Pentax would be better off spending time making good, competitive, popular cameras. The mount is fine.
