HSM, SDM lenses on K10D

I read somewhere that the K10D needs a firmware update to use HSM or SDM lenses. Is that true or can I just put an HSM or SDM lens on the K10D and it'll work?

Firmware 1.3 adds SDM support for the K10D.. otherwise you'll wont see the benefit of SDM

Montezuma, if you check the Sigma website carefully, you'll see that their HSM lenses aren't supplied in Pentax K mount. Their lenses that come in K mount are non-HSM models from several levels of their model line, including some EX lenses. I've had a recent e-mail from Sigma's USA office that suggests that we won't see any HSM K mount lenses in the near future.

I believe, the re-release of the 70-200f2.8 EX DG in Pentax mount is suppose to be HSM.

A few months ago a rumor was going around that the reason there were few Sigma lenses around for Pentax was that they needed time to reverse engineer the Pentax SDM system. It seems they succeeded.

It seems as the following Sigma lenses will have internal focus motor as they state about the Pentax version (at dpreview): “If the camera body does not support HSM motor, AF does not work.”.
Built in image stabilization (OS) will not be available in the Pentax version though.

18-125mm F3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM
70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO
50-150mm F2.8 II EX DC HSM APO 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM
150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM

Good news indeed.

The HSM motor is in the lens. So, these new lenses will only work with the newer cameras: K100D Super, K10D, K200D, K20D.

So if I need to get firmware update 1.3 do I have to load the ones before it? And where do I go to get the update?

You can go straight to the latest version (1.3)
It can be downloaded from PENTAX Support&Service
Instructions are on the web page. It is quite straightforward, download the software into an empty memory card, put the card in the camera, turn the camera on while holding down one of the buttons. It is all in the instructions.
