A few K20D samples

Hi,

Yesterday I was in local photo equipment shop and when I asked them about K20D they simply handed me K20D

Here are a few pictures I have made, all of them are jpegs out of the camera (resized of course), Auto WB (mixed lighting in that store).

K20D noise reduction was off.

If the WB wasn't adjusted by you in PP, I'm impressed. Store lighting usually sucks (with at least 3 temperatures - window, fluorescent and incandescent) and the camera seems to have gotten it right on. The images look good and sharp as well with clearly more dynamic range. So we need some more details. ISO's used and lens etc.

Nice to see it's already on the shelves. Thanks for sharing.

I was in a shop yesterday and they said they will have then March 15th in Canada.

100% crops

Pictures were shot with DA★ 50-135mm f/2.8

I did not adjust WB, it was AWB and jpegs are straight out of the camera.

Also I must tell that camera was not for sale, it was demo unit

Thanks.. if you get a chance can you try a M or K lens w/ green button metering at various stopped down aperatures??? I'm pretty well assuming it is going to be an issue that I'll have to live with w/ my next gen Pentax........would love to be proven wrong.
Banding and "that issue" were the 2 major drawbacks ( the only drawbacks really)about the K10 for me...
Last issue is to find the true "base iso". If 200 then 1600 is really only equiv to 800 on the K10.
Anyways, images look really promising.. Again thanks.

I like the noise on K20D! In my opinion the major problem with noise with most cameras is not the presence of noise itself, but totally unnatural color noise distribution: various colors tend to group into colored "spots" or "patches", and also there is a tendency for pixels to group into small boxes/dashes producing the effect similar to overcompressed JPEG image, but only in noisy areas.

Unlike all that K20D noise looks more like a film grain to me, and it looks better than it would on equivalent ISO color films. That's a great achievement!

Great to see these pics. I like them, not only from the technical point of view. The people you found in the shop suit your goal (making some nice pics of nice people)... Did you pre-order?

Firmware 0.20 only went up to ISO 1600, it was about the first release (late Oct, early Nov 07) in the first beta bodies.

I think Ben's last beta was using v 0.37 or 0.39, I suspect it has moved on a bit since then!

You can find several ISO 3200 and 6400 samples around, but none are using final firmware yet. Give it about another 4 to 6 weeks yet.

In the German forum DigitalFotoNetz there is a report about a user meeting with Pentax Europe in Hamburg where the users of the forum could handle the new K20D with final firmware! There is a long thread including some high ISO samples there.
Your favorite translation tool should be able to get something out of it.

Have a nice day!

Edit: Didn't realize, it might be necessary to register in order to see attached images (high ISO on page 4). I'm sorry. But you can read the comments nevertheless.

Yes, forum DigitalFotoNetz (DFN) and Pentax Europe (both organizations are located in Germany) maintain a good level of cooperation. Something which Pentax U.S. could easily improve on given the fact that such a nice forum as this one here does exist...

I was stupefied by one very precise date:

2008, March 20 as arrival date of the ship carrying the first consumer shipment to Europe

One more bit from this thread:

blende8 (same user here) wrote over there:

Two models to be released at Photokina 2008, a KxxxD and a KxD (APS-C, available some time in 2009).

He also mentions that he will report more details later.
