K-x - What's going on in there?

Is the optical viewfinder on the K-x actually looking through the lens? Can this view be directed to the digital viewing screen when in the Manual Mode? When I come up with one of the menus it asks me to define the shutter speed and f-stop. Is this related to the f stop my lens is set to, or is this a virtual shutter and diaphragm setting, and is that menu the one I should be using with manual lenses?

Yes, it is. To see the picture on the screen, press the LV button. And here's the manual lens usage guide:

Pentax K-30 vs K-5 IIs Cross Sections - Pentax Camera News & Rumors - PentaxForums.com
Have a look at a cross sectioned camera for a good idea of how the viewfinder works.
But don't try this at home...

M mode is manual, not automatic. You have to input all the parameters yourself. Use P or auto or scn modes for automated modes where you don't have many choices to make. Av, Tv, and M need your knowledge and input.
Lv is liveview, which just displays the image the lens is seeing on the back lcd. In M mode you still have to input the numbers.
If you are using a manual lens, you have to use M mode and input all the numbers yourself. You can use the sunny 16 rule, make a guess, or use green button metering.
For more on how to use manual lenses, see here:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-lens-articles/110657-how-use-meter...k-x-k-7-a.html
Be sure to go into the menu and allow aperture ring.
