5d vs k20d

Just curious how people think the k20d image quailty will compare with the canon 5d

what do you define as image quality?

one is a full frame sensor, with 13.8 million pixles spread over a larger area than the pentax's 14.something million pixles spread over a smaller area.

on paper the 5D has greater dynamic range, and more utility in the wide angle side (for landscapes and interiors)

its a very specific tool, i would never use the 5d to compare to anything other than another FF Dslr or a film camera.

I have a feeling the OP might be suggesting something like this:

If you compared an 8x10 from a 5d and an 8x10 from the k20d, what would be some pros and cons regarding the quality of each image. which would be better?

yes yes, each camera has a different personality and really you cant compare any two cameras....but what the hey.....

what lens is the canon using and what lens is the pentax using?

i dont think the QUALITY will be any different, what will be different is the K20D's ability to produce amazing quality shots at higher ISO's

otherwise one would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

thinks.........
I have a K20D ISO 1600 RAW or two here; the pixel-level read noise is about 11.8 12-bit ADUs, which, while not as good as Canon DSLRs or the Nikon D3, is better than pretty much all others DSLRs out there (and about the same as the D300). with slightly more pixels than the D300, it should have slightly less image read noise.

The real unique beauty of the K20D, as I expect it, is its performance at low ISO, which should surpass any APS DSLR at the image level in read noise, and roughly equal them in shot noise, and surpass all DSLRs in image read noise at its lowest ISO. This assumes that the K20D has a similar readout system as the K10D (I didn't get any ISO 100 RAWs yet), which seems to be one single but very clean readout at base ISO at 22 bits, and then doing the higher ISOs with digital arithmetic.

It would be very difficult to tell them apart on poster size prints if they were processed to produce the same colour and saturation levels.

5d at iso3200. k20d doesn't come close.

exif data

the 5d is the better camera in every way. tighter/proper dof/bokeh, better iso performance. aps-c is a compromise, that anyone can learn to work with. i love my k10d, but if i could get a full frame at a reasonable price i'd switch in an instance because it'll let me get the images i want.

f1.4 will be f1.4

Yes, I think you're right and all your points made are valid. But then I still wish there is a Full Frame *Pentax* DSLR, but not to switch :-)

i'm betting on a ff from pentax, much like nikon did with a mp reduction for sensor area when using aps-c glass. it'd be a shame to never get the most out of my primes going forward.

i think its best to wait until we get some locals handling K20D's and really test it out.

plus, how many IS Canon primes do you have?

none, that's not my picture. it's from a friend of mine in warsaw, poland who owns more camera gear than most of us combined

it was just a great pic to show you how the 5d performs at iso3200.

Not sure about that. The image has been cropped and sharply downsized. I won't be surprised if K20D can produce the same quality at ISO3200 when noise reduced with downsizing to such 500x500 image size.

that's impressive, my k10d doesn't come close to that in low light. 1600 is completely unusable, and we're talking about a k20d; not a k100d.
