SDHC Card Test 3, New Cards and USB Reader

This is a continuation of the original, https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/206003-sd-hc-memor...omparison.html, and followup, https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/206396-more-sdhc-t...g-results.html, threads regarding my testing of SDHC Cards. The objective of these tests is to find the fastest writing cards for use in my K20D.

Since the second test I've acquired a Transcend Information USB 3.0 Card Reader (TS-RDF5K) & 2 new SanDisk Ultra 16GB SDHC UHS-I Class 10 Memory Cards [SDSDU016GA11].

Below is a spreadsheet where you will find the results of testing the new cards, as well as the old cards, with the new reader and in camera.

The new Sandisk Ultras, while testing at a speedy 45MB/s read, were a disappointment in their write speeds. Averaging at a slow 11.75 MB/s, while meeting minimum standards of class 10, they were barely better than the Kingston Class 4's and the Mushkin Class 10's. All of the old cards tested better read speeds with the new card reader.

My quest for a faster writing card goes on and I am going to acquire the Sandisk Extreme series next as the advertised write speeds are up to 45MB/s. Although the K20d can not take advantage of UHS-1 protocol, I am hoping for better write time than exhibited by the Transcend Class 10's.

Thank you for the work that went into this. I was confused by one sentence and suggest the highlighted edit:

Something isn't right, those USB3 reader sequential write speeds look slow. I have yet to get a USB3 card reader, but using 2 different USB2 readers I get about 20Mb/s read and write with Sandisk Extreme 45Mb/s rated SD 16Gb cards.

Steve B, The Sandisk cards were Ultras, not extremes. I ordered an extreme today and will update when received. DeadJohn, you are right. It should've been write, not read and I have edited it. Thank You.

Yes, one has to be careful in reading the manufacture's specs even,
and not yield to our own wishful thinking (which is what advertising rely on)

This is the specs of the 16GB Sandisk Ultra class 10 UHS-1 SDHC card -
Ultra SDHC and SDXC Memory Card by SanDisk

Performance/speed: Up to 30MB/s read speed; write speed lower
(my highlight in red)
and as tests show even using USB3.0 the write speed is substantially and materially slower to no better than most common class 10 cards - and it's the write speed that is the important one for performance in cameras.

Added Sandisk Extreme to test.

Received a new SanDisk Extreme 16 GB SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Flash Memory Card 45MB/s [SDSDX-016G-AFFP].
Surprising results in new thread here:

That seems slow indeed. I did that test, probably a little different with some programm I don't know at the moment:

SanDisk 32GB UHS-I 45MB/s card and transcend usb3 cardreader.

Once again, the card was an Ultra 30MB/s not the card you tested RonHendriks1966, To see results of the test on your card, go to test #4 thread referenced above.
