12 Bits/Channel RAW files?

When I open a *DNG file in Photoshop CS2 it shows that the Depth is 8 Bits/Channel. I though if I have the camera set for the highest quality image its supposed to be 12 Bits/Channel.

Is there a setting on the camera I need to change?

Thanks...Blake

I think they are the settings on which it is going to import at, rather than the properties of the actual capture. You can change them to whatever constraints it has.

The default edit mode for Photoshop CS2 is 8 Bits/Channel. This overides the camera setting to my knowledge. Photoshop CS2 does allows you to edit both JEPG and RAW in the 16Bits/Channel mode by going to the top line dropdown menu IMAGE>Mode>16Bits/Channel.

You cannot set the bit-depth of a RAW file in the camera.

When you open a DNG file in CS2, ACR converts the 12bit RAW file to a regular image file. There is a user-settable "Depth" parameter in ACR which decides whether the output image file is 8bit or 16bit.

ACR either maps the 12bit RAW file into 8bits or pads it into 16bits as required.

Nit to pick... Actually the image file is 15bit (if you pick 16bit), 1 bit for info ect...Not that it really matters but images are edited in 15bit............

You're right of course, I used lazy terminology.

I guess the files should really be called 'signed 15bit' or something, rather than 16bit
