Seal maintenance

Is there any way of keeping the seals in the Pentax body from drying or the equivalent so that it stays water resistant?

Thanks

Randy

Excellent question and one that I don't recall ever seeing asked before. I have no idea what the answer is either.

IMHO every seal dries out eventually
I can't figure out how my K10 died, but it could have been a seal failure

Thanks
Randy

I know, worked with aircrafts but there are indeed seals that would last a long time without drying out, certainly when you store the lenses correctly so not in the sun for example.

The seals on the W90 are only good for up to a year and need serviced. They have to be sent to Pentax for it.

The mount seal on the 18-55 WR feels like some sort of silicone rather than natural rubber. That should last a long time. Natural rubbers break down pretty quickly.

My 13 year old car door gaskets are still in near new condition and they take far more environmental abuse than my lenses.

For a large portion of this thread, I thought you were talking about these seals.

Yep. I was going post that seals need basically the same care as sea lions.

Well I think that in 10 years time some lenses must have problems with their seals. Maybe the problem isn't there yet, because time is not yet past long enough to give trouble.

To be honest, the entire idea of Pentax bodies having seals inside that could dry out wasn't completely out of this world for me.
I remembered a similar thread by Hilo about Spotmatics having mice inside.
