Didn't see this anywhere (did a search) but figured it might be helpful/interesting to see what everyone uses the user mode on the dial for.

Currently I have it set to program and jpeg so if I go to a party or family function I can just set it to that and shoot away and not worry about raw images. This is mostly because I couldn't figure out anything better to set it to quite yet. (another reason for this thread )

So, whatcha got saved in user mode?

My User Mode

It changes from time to time, depending on what I am doing. The last thing I was doing was taking indoor shots of our new floor and the mouldings to send to envious relatives. Images were taken using DA* 16-50 and DA 12-24 depending on the area I needed to cover.

ISO 400
File format RAW PEF
JPEG *** 10 mp
Program mode (can Exposure compensate in USER)
Flash on when raised
EV compensation 0
Exposure bracketing starts at 5 frames, 1 stop
Drive mode: Single
Flash exposure compensation - 1.33 stops
Extended bracketing off
Sensitivity 0
Image tone, saturation, contrast, and sharpness at factory default

I have it set to medium quality 2mp jpeg with a custom white balance. I use this with my home studio lit by two cheap desk lights to take pictures for eBay and my shop website so I don't have to adjust the white balance every time, or resize them in photoshop.

Settings for using my hotshoe flash.

I realized that what I really want, instead of one USER setting on the dial, is nothing on the dial but instead a little row of buttons (four seems like a good number) which each stores a definable set of parameters which that button resets to. That's because while the USER mode is useful, I often make one or two tweaks from the default from that situation, and then when I turn the camera off and on again, those are lost -- the "memory" settings from the normal modes don't apply. It'd be much more useful to be able to return the camera to one of a selection of known states at the touch of a button.
