Interesting note found on page 248 of the K20D User Manual

The default "Custom Image" is set to Natural *2

*2 [Bright] when [Language/ ] is set to a language other than Japanese.

Gotcha Phil!

I love it!

Whaaa... ? Encoding processing changes with language?! That's pretty funny. And yes, "should test well" is the 1st thing that comes to mind.

Huh? Obviously an inside joke others, including me, may not be aware of.

I think they are alluding to DP reviews' Phil Askey or Phillip Greenspun at Photo.net.

Hi Stewart,
Cast your mind back to the K10D 'just' review where the jpeg quality was ridiculed. The K10 default setting is "natural" when a simple shift to "bright" apparently gives a ...."brighter" image that appeals to certain reviewers.

So, if you set the language to English, the default image tone is "Bright". Definitely should help with Phil!

Actually it's better than that. If the language is set to anything except Japanese the mode is set to BRIGHT. Pentax trying to tell us something?

Its likely Pentax's way to cater for a geographical market preference.
They may have found their Japanese market prefers "Natural" setting.
Most other users seem to prefer the punchier output from jpegs on "Bright" setting.

Ah, got it now, guys. I wonder if this is just a humorous coincidence or an indication Phil's review irritated Pentax as well. We'll probably never know, but it's funny nonetheless.

Dear Pentax engineers,

Please, change this setting in the next firmware update to:

*2 [Bright] when [Language/ ] is set to a language other than British.
and implement British english as a seperate language.

and if you have no idea how to do British, in that case please change this setting to:
*2 [Bright] when [Language/ ] is set to a language other than Japanese and Dutch.

Thanks in advance,

- Bert
