My PEFs are about 12Mb while the DNG are 23Mb on the PC. What I dont understand is the manual on pg 266 says a 4Gb SD card will hold 162 PEF images and 161 DNG images. The only place I've seen how many images are left on the SD card is in viewfinder after taking a photo (probably somewhere else, but I have found it). If I switch between PEF and DNG, the # of images still only changes by 1 implying that the manual is correct.

4GB/162 = 24.7Mb each...

So why are PEFs the same size as DNG on the SD card?

The camera merely estimates how many .PEF shots are remaining, in a very conservative manner, since the amount of compression possible on a given image varies with the content of the image.

So, if I shoot PEF, and they get compressed, does the viewfinder show 1 image left, then 1, then 1???

If seen similar effects with the K10D.

My K10D gest always confused if I:
- Use 8Gb card or larger
- Regularly switch between RAW, JPG and RAW+ modes.

The images left counter sometimes is off by a couple of hunderd shots!
If it is confused, after a few shots it might jump back and foreward, sometimes not....
Guess I need to wait for firmware release 1.4 (never to come) and you for release 1.1

On my K10D in RAW, the number of remaining shots seems to be consistent with the number of DNG shots that can be taken. I get roughly 50% more than the stated value in PEF.

When you turn the camera off, the number of shots left is displayed in the top LCD.
