Sold a few aquarium shots to magazines, though not an aquarium expert by any means. Here's what I've done: Macro lens with a rubber rim on the hood so it could touch the glass and seal out flash burst (A*200/4 Macro). Flash fired from off camera (on a cord, I'm too dumb to figure out how to use wireless flash--I tried it again last night just to see how dumb I really am. Actually, I'm fairly smart--I own flash cords! I'll just pretend there's no such thing as wireless flash--that'll fix it right?). The flash is important because it gets you enough shutter speed to stop movement and helps get enough light to allow a smaller aperture to get enough depth of field. Try the flash at various angles to reduce reflective shine on the fish or to bring out texture of scales and fin detail. Try shooting somewhere in the middle of the aperture range to get enough depth of field to encompass the entire fish.
With your described set up--four feet away from the tank--you can't use flash, thereby really reducing your ability to control lighting, shutter speed or depth of field...you'll need more patience than most anglers while fighting fish with your current set-up.

if you get a lot of light above, you don't need to flash. a cheap metal halide lamp is perfect.
