I thought about getting a T3i or T4i for a long time, mostly to dabble with video. But DSLR video still isn't all that versatile. Autofocus sucks. The shallow DOF of a large sensor, and the nauseating rolling shutter effect, is a pain when you want to capture your kids running around. For documenting the life around you in video format, a smaller sensor of a dedicated video camera is a distinct advantage.

I have the 40 Ltd and I don't find it awkward, but some do. If I had to start over with one prime, I would probably have to go with the DA35 2.4, as it is more of a "normal" FOV.

If you really are itching to buy a new body, here is a review of the K-30 by Jordan from TCS (happens to be a member here). At 11:18, he says that the K-30 "dominates" the T4i.

Dang... I ws looking for the link to that and you beat me to it.

I had a K-r and traded it for a K30. To me, the Pentax feels more solid in the hands than the comparable C +N models.

Thanks again everyone. I'm not really itching for a new body, but did see a great deal on the Canon bundle and just wanted to put some feelers out to see if I would be passing up something that I "had to have." Apparently not, so I'll stick with my K-r which has been a great camera now for about 2 1/2 years.

Now, the prime lens idea really does appeal to me. I'm going to look hard at the DA 35mm 2.4; seems like it might be a good all-around, versatile prime for me to get into without laying out a lot of cash.

Definitely agree. I have had it and have been impressed - it is of Limited lens quality with a bargain price tag for its cheaper build.

No. Primes are not "all-around" lenses. Leave out that phrase and it become a yes.

+1 DA 35mm F2.4

I have it and I love it. Perfect beginner prime lens. Stays on my camera 70% of the time nowadays.

I think that with Pentax, high IQ has never been any more value for money than since the K-01/K-r and DA 35/50.

Okay, can anyone tell me if the DA 18 - 135mm 3.5 - 5.6 would be a good choice to replace my kit 18-55 and 55-300 lenses as an "all around" lens? I like the idea of the versatility of 18 - 135mm, but am concerned that image quality may not be much better than the kit lenses and/or may fall noticeably lower than what I would get with the DA 35mm 2.4 prime.

Thoughts?

I think that's a valid concern. I personally would suggest you buy a prime as soon as possible. DA 35mm, DA 40mm (XS is fairly cheap), DA 50mm f1.8... All of these will be great. Really, there is a big difference and you will not regret it, even if you "lose" some flexibility. You gain a lot more, better low light performance, better rendering, etc.
You already have two kit lenses, no need to buy a third. You should keep the 55-300mm, because even if it doesn't have the best rendering, it is adequate and has great reach. Finding another lens that goes to 300mm and has significantly better IQ will probably cost a lot more. Its always nice to have a tele on hand.

Pentax-DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR no-no - it can not be a substitute Pentax DA55-300/4-5, 8ED, these are lenses with quite different characteristics except that they overlap millimeters to a certain length, can only upgrade for the Pentax DA18-55 / 3.5-5.6 AL WR

I agree, so you can experience an AF prime
If , for some reason you end up not using it, sell it again at only slight loss...

Absolutely correct. If I get a chance, I'll take some pictures using the 18-135 at 135 to show that there's a major difference in the lenses. The 18-135 is a good upgrade from the 18-55 for a walkaround lens, where the 55-300 is really more for long work. At 55mm it's not very useful up close, IMHO - if you're trying to take pictures of the kids, dogs etc. you'll find it tight. Don't think of the 55-300 as a replacement for the kit short zoom, it's a replacement for the kit long zoom (and a good one).
