Sales and impact on price of K-5II & IIs

The K-5II and IIs were announced in September 2012 as the new Flagship models. They were priced $100 apart with the IIs priced higher. Initial statements from Pentax indicated that they believed that the II would outsell the IIs. In the US, the K-5 IIs was available for pre-order for $1299. This was a marked reduction in MSRP over the release of the K-5 which debuted at $1795. Both the IIs and II arrived at B&H on 10/24/12 and went on sale for $1299 and $1199 respectively. On February 1st a price drop for the II and IIs was announced of $103. So the II became $1096 and the IIs was $1196 at both Adorama and B&H. On March 11th Pentax announced a combination deal where the buyer saved $250 on the FA 31mm F1.8, 43mm F1.9, and 77mm F1.8 for a total savings of up to $750 with the purchase of a K-5 IIs until March 31, 2013. This started rumors that the FA Trio had been discontinued, which Adam looked into and announced yesterday that Pentax said that the 3 FA lenses were still in production.

So where do the prices stand now?

The K-5II can be found for $843 from the notorious Electronics Basket, $919 at Emmy Photo, and $1096 from Adorama & B&H.

The K-5IIs can be found for $1013 from the notorious Electronics Basket and Sunset Electronics, and $1196 from Adorama & B&H.

The prices are still $100 apart from the key ADs in the US but the K-5II has dropped more with the gray market discounters. Does this discrepancy with the gray marketeers indicate that the K-5II sales are not as strong as the K-5IIs? Some have said so online but has Pentax acknowledged that as a fact?

Where do you think the prices for the K-5 models will go in the coming months? Down obviously, but how far and how fast?

If you would be so kind as to divulge the launch date of the k-3, I will be glad to tell what the k-5II price curve will be.

I've been watching the price on the K-5iis for a while now. Emmy Photo actually had it down to $1049 for a couple days last week or so, then must have run out of inventory. I watched Emmy as I won't buy from the other vendor mentioned.

My gut feeling is that the price will hang where it is for a while unless a replacement model is ever announced. With that said, I think the price will stay steady for at least 6 months.

Funny as this brings something to the surface in my mind. The Q and K-01 started out with a very high price and didn't sell. Only when the prices were reduced to fire sale status did they become popular. So I wonder if another model is ever announced, will the II and IIs get fire sale prices also?

jatrax - where are you finding a model number of a K-3? Never head of that model before.

The K-0 will be out in October, just in time for Thanksgiving & Christmas.

Stan, the Q sold well in Japan and other key Asian markets prior to the sale pricing - but I get your point about the K-5II & IIs.

Price in Japan,
K5IIs body only, 89,800 yens before 10% rebate, after rebate = 80,820 yens ( around 817 USD) link
K5II body only, 78,800 yens before 10% rebate, after rebate = 70,920 yens ( around 703 USD) link
(rebate will be returned as point which you can use as money in the store.)

wow! I haven't checked the price for sometime. couldn't believe it go down this much!
see the price diffrences and see the Japanese yen is going down in value, people out side of Japan should expect even more price reduction soon. (I guess!)
K5II current price in japan is similar to my K5 classic which was bought a little bit before it was officially discontinue. ...

Interestingly, for the first time in history, Australian prices for the K-5 II/s are lower than in the US.

Actually according to impeccable internet sources (I read it in the rumor section) Pentax will be releasing a k-300 (entry level), an updated k-30II, a k-02 (redesigned mirrorless APS-C), a k-3 (24mp APS-C), a 645DII (with larger sensor) and a FF camera called the LX-d. I am quite sure of the names and so on because I read it on the internet. /sarc

Yes, lots of history in that name. I never had one but a friend of mine (now shooting 5d mkII) still has his LX and a couple of lenses. I don't think he ever uses it, but he won't part with either. He shot professionally with it for a number of years before moving on to other occupations.
