Smc Tak 1.4/50 vs. K 1.4/50

Has anyone compared these lenses?
Is it the same, just pk instead of m42?

The latest generation of Tak's basically got re-released as K lenses. That's how Pentax could present a full line of K-mount lenses from day 1.

The main difference is the K doesn't have a Thoriated element. I believe they switched to Lanthanum at this point.

Another difference is filter size. The K is 52mm, the Takumar is 49mm.

The K lens is sublime in its own right (warmer than the M) and the A formula was slightly tweaked and the coatings updated. There is however a certain ethereal quality to the late S-M-C and SMC that is missing from the K. Perhaps that is the result of the coating change - or perhaps it is my imagination.

I think that is a good question, and I'd also like to hear what others have to say

Sofar its rendering more pictures better at 1.4 but maybe the glass is clearer compared to my smc.
well i have another smc coming together with a black spotmatic f so maybe i should compare against that as well.

It's generally accepted that the two are the same optically speaking.

Given the effects of time, you can expect variations in performance between samples.

I have a couple of examples of each and find little difference.

I have only super tak 8 element and K, so there are at least 3 versions between my 2 lenses. Sounds like cause for a gettogether

I agree...

I've been trying to pull together photos that show my different lenses' best characteristics. The photo below is the one for my S-M-C Takumar (late version), because it shows those ethereal + 3D qualities IMO. If I'd taken it with the K version (which I didn't), it wouldn't have been much different, except slightly crisper - and not because of yellowing in the Takumar thorium coatings, mine doesn't have that problem - but that's how the K seems to me to render. I prefer the Takumar.

Then there's that psychological thing about putting on the adaptor, screwing in the M42 mount, and using the metal focus....and then looking at the results. Somehow, one wants them to be different/special.

Nice photos, with colors very characteristic of the K50 1.4 I had and let go (because it was similar to the Takumar, and other 50/55s). I like the front and back bokeh in the second photo; I think having things almost "see through" in front of objects in focus is under-rated as a photographic technique, although my family disagrees and thinks it distracts from the image!!

I think boriscleto covered the differences, but yes they are optically considered to be the same, with no change to the optical design (unlike the later M and A series) and (to my eyes) no change to the coatings. I owned a copy of both the S-M-C and the K, and could not tell a difference between the results I got (whereas for the M and A I did notice some different characteristics). In the end I sold the K simply to balance my kit better (as I like and often use the M50/1.7). Of all the K-mount 50/1.4 lenses Pentax made, I feel the K is the best.

I compared my two SMC to my K and the K has a warmer color tone, and until
today, my feeling was that the K was sharper but the truth is that i hold the trigger pressed down using the k100 focus peak
and therefor probably in more pictures activating the stabilizer.
