Well Pentax that is just a school boy error. They wonder why they haven't got a bigger market share.
It is not an error. That is to say that Pentax for the K20D did not overlooked turning off DFNR. There is a menu that looks like you can turn it off but you can’t. This has been wined about fro some time. The consensus is that with out DFNR it would be unacceptable. This is a big problem for astrophotography (there are better cameras then using a DSLR) but mostly just a nuisance the rest of the time. I don’t think that Pentax is going to change this.

oh yes, as we all know, Pentax is failing because of noise reduction.

This whole DFNR thing could have made me stay with Canon.

I'll just have to get an older CCD Pentex body for the longer night/star trail shots.

It would be nice if it was an option though.

That's the reason after upgrading from k200d to k20d I kept k200d.

Noise reduction OFF

Has anyone checked if the Noise Reduction with long exposures have been corrected in K20D latest FW?

With the new 1.03 and in the menu set to auto, DFNR will only turn on for anything longer the 15 seconds. This is new as it use to go on for any thing more then .3 seconds no matter what DFNR was set to. So this is an improvement. But in bulb mode DFNR is on for anything more then .3 no matter what the setting is. Whether you need/should to make your own DF and do NR PP for .3 to 15 seconds I don’t know.

From what I understand, since the K20D uses a CMOS sensor which overheats real bad at long exposures, there is no point in making DFNR turn-off-able (is that a word?)

I suppose that any sensor will get hotter and produce more noise the longer it is used. I have not seen any thing that looks like a lot of heat noise at up to 3 minutes with DFNR. I have not had time to play with the K20D at times up to 15 seconds without DFNR so I don’t know if there is that much more noise then like with my DS. In auto if you are taking maybe 15 second photos the sensor may start to heat up and do DFNR for time less the 15 seconds. But as long as the camera will let you take photos that are more then lets say 5 seconds continuously with less then a second between the photos you should be able to take as many JPG photos and stack them to get as long a star trails as you would like.
