Doesn't really matter. Companies having several brands in the market is fairly common practice; for example cars (GM). As long as the Pentax brand is has a positive image which helps sell camera's, they'll keep it.

What does this mean for Pentax? Didn't Ricoh promise to keep the Pentax brand on the DSLR cameras?

Sorry but did you guys actually read the document? It says:
QuoteQuote:
Both PENTAX and RICOH products will remain in the market to reinforce the company’s commitment to the business.
RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. remains committed to further strengthening its offerings and presence in the area of consumer camera products and related services.
So from what I gather, basically, everything remains the same.
Besides, would they get 2 new cameras out this month under a name they plan to phase out the next?

The products name will remain the same. So, Pentax will still be on front of our cameras.

Quote; ''Both PENTAX and RICOH products will remain in the market to reinforce the company’s commitment to the business.''

But is this quote referring to products already in the market or is it referring to newly developed products hitting the market under their particular brands? That "remain" makes me think is the former as for something to remain, it must have been there already. Maybe it's the actual "product lines" ie. K series etc. will remain. Hopefully.

I don't much care whether the gear says Pentax or Ricoh, as long as they keep making quality K-mount & Q-mount bodies & lenses.

Anyway, this is not a good moment to change the name. After almost 3 years of launching only small updated DSLR, something like new-old camera, and a lot of questions about the future of Pentax, this change is not something to inspire more trust. So, i think that those managers must do something soon, really soon. At least an announcement about future products.

I think this is merely for corporate structure purposes. The Pentax name will certainly remain on the cameras, it would be foolish not to.

I think might be bad idea to drop the Pentax name... I doubt they will do it... well I least I hope they won't...

I hope they still have the pentax name on the DSLRs. I think they will keep the Pentax name for the DSLRs but the brand name being Ricoh. Like Leitz and Leica.

It depends if their target audience has name recognition with either brand. BTW, Leica originally stood for "LEItz CAmera" - but Leitz sold off Leica decades ago, and it has gone through a few owners since. Brand names are commodities now, unrelated to the owners or even to the items sold - just a means to attract buyers. I'm not sure "Pentax" means much to the next generation of buyers.
The press notice really stresses the "consumer" orientation of the company. Perhaps they are realizing more that professional photography is a dying market. If so they may also be re-grouping on any future plans for the 645D and traditional SLR cameras, especially FF.
