K20D my ''own'' first impressions...

As is stated in the title, these are my ''OWN'' first impressions of this wonderful camera. The most important thing is all about Image quality...First, the most daunting thing is that some Jpegs are 10 megs...Huge from that 14.6Mp...This is very good as it has so much res, that it allows for 100% crops with crystal clear results...The Auto focus is way faster than that of my K110D, K100D super and K1OD..., this in spight of what pentax says..This is a pleasant surprise that I was not expecting...Next the High ISO is impressive and its ability to focus in Low light is another unexpected +.....

I would say that for me personally, I did not really gain anything over the magnificent K1OD because it fits in with what I do, for my style...In the things I shoot, I would get the same results with My K10D, or my K100D super since I do not shoot when it is dark out....Now perhaps as I get more accustomed to it, it will begin to separate itself from my other DSLR's...Now to keep this in context, I gave away my D200 to my daughter because I feel like the K10D is the better camera and so I kept the good one....My K100D super I rate higher than my wifes D40....I have not had the chance to try out a D300, so I can't comment on it or any Canon stuff....

All in all, I do not regret my purchase, but if money where the deciding factor, I would have been better off spending that money on glass...

The images below are crops with no PP straight from the K2OD.... iF anyone wants to see an original 10 meg un cropped image, I can try and post it...

That's odd ! My 50-135 works with Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x . Is your Pz series ?? It has two power contacts right inside .

That couple surely have some nice gears . Look like she's holding some Nikon D2/D3 body .

One thing I'm happy about, the K20D flash doesn't vignette with the Sigma 17-70 at all at any focal length, with the hood off anyway. My istDs did and I had to keep it set narrower than about 24mm.

Whoa, Gitzo with Wimberley Gimbal head plus some pricy cameras and lenses (I definitely see what looks like two Nikon D3s). The photographers you shot have sure got the best gear.

When I got there to the pond to test out my camera and saw those two folks there, I thought to myself...Hmmm, some ''Pro's practicing...Turns out that those two have never had a DSLR a day in their life. They are going on a trip to Africa and bought all that gear for their trip...I ended up teaching them how to use the stuff. They where both using D2's...Boy, those two have no idea what they got themselves into...The only thing that impressed me about that camera over the K20D was the FPS..In credible...But that is it.

Ummm... are you sure you meant "100% crops"? Just wondering... they are very sharp but most look like they are resized to web resolution.

I just tried uploading a whole untouched image but it was to big. If you would like, I can e mail you one. You would be surprised at the size of these things.

G'day Javier,
Thanks for your thoughts on K20D, this camera is setting high standards for the $$$.

I don't envy the other two you helped out, that is a lot of gear to be lugging around.....wonder who is going to get the privelege of carrying it most of the time.

Cheers
Grant

What Twin meant was those pics were resized/rescaled (from 4xxx-3xxx down to ~ 800x500) which is very different to being 100% crops as you indicated.

100% crop is when you crop a rectangle of 800pixels by 500pixels out of the original pic (roughly 1/6th of width & 1/6th of height) and display it at 800x500 -- hence called 100%.

Javier

Very nice of you to teach them . I must agree with Grant : If they go on those safari tours , that tripod is no good ! From what I can see they pack enough people in there . Private truck ? Anyway I hope they have fun . It will be one heck of a trip .

Perhaps your right and I don't know what a 100% crop is. I did not know they had to be a certain size.

100% crops

Ok, so this is the 100% crop...

I went through it and from the three images above, the first is 17% (no crop), the second is a 50% crop, the last one a 100% crop indeed. However, it as a sharpened look, like upsampled to 200% and then sharpened. Strange.

Let me quote a 100% crop from my own K20D here (attached).

Maybe, what we see here is a difference in Raw converters? (Javier has probably used ACR 3.7; I used PPL coming with the K20D.)
