If you buy into the pixel wars, the 6meg ccd sensor should be worthless!! But looking back through all the awesome shots, (not mine) there is something special about how it captures images!!!

Silent Night by Candle Light

K100DS, ISO3200, Vivitar-A 28mm f2.8 @ f2.8, 1/10 sec., Topaz B&W Effects2

I shot this at ISO3200 in camera, and actually had to push it a half stop in post-processing, so equivalent to ISO4800. RAW rules. Pixels? Who needs all those pixels?

Merry Christmas!

And a merry Solstice to you, Sir! That is a wonderful photo, and goes to show how much hype we're fed by the whole Camera/Media Coimplex to keep us in a constant state of arousal and doubt: arousal at all the *NEW!* & Improved!! equipment that is Must Have, and doubt about our own obsolete and poorly functioning cameras...

Thanks NealJane1 and Jussi! If I had the latest equipment in my hands, it would not produce significantly different results. I have come nowhere close to the point where my equipment limits me. My daughter's K-50 is GREAT, and she NEEDS it since she is now shooting professionally, but in my hands it would perform no differently, no better than my K100DS.

My daughter told me about a local photography club, "Ozark Shutter Junkies." We went to a meeting of the club last night while my wife watched the grandkids, and thoroughly enjoyed it! One lady there just bought a K100D, and had lots of questions for me, especially when she saw the "Silent Night by Candle Light" photo which I earlier posted to the club's Facebook page. It was nice to meet another K100D owner, and there was one fellow who said he owned one a few years ago, but has since "upgraded" to some sort of Canon DSLR. He said he was not happy with the "noisy" output of the K100D. I wonder if he knew about RAW files? Hmmmmm. He had the K100D Magic Lantern Guide in a pile of give-away and cheap items he had there, so he gave it to me. I also bought from him an ND4 filter and CP filter, as well as a hot-shoe adapter with flash plug extension on it that will turn my H1A cold-shoe attachment into a hot shoe, thus allowing me to use my AF280T on my H1A. I was thinking of fabricating one of these, so was glad to find it in his junk pile!

How the heck did you get that so noise free; beautiful.

Hey you ! Stop watching me.

Not 100% sharp (not sure why, possibly a bit of camera shake).

Thanks!

Pentax Digital Camera Utility - does a good job of noise reduction carefully applied to RAW files.

In addition, this photo was heavily cropped (maybe as much as 50%) which makes noise reduction less effective, so I did have a challenge.

I found the color to be distracting (VERY difficult color balance with candle light!), so the Topaz B&W Effects2 worked well for the toned monochrome conversion. Monchrome also helps minimize the effect of color noise. A final application of some curves helped darken the noise in the darker areas so it was not as noticeable.
