There is something magic about the K100D. The color rendition is....liquid candy. Reminds me of Fuji Velvia. That's why I still have (and use) mine. K200D...come and gone. K7...come and gone. Even the K-3, which I'm growing to appreciate, doesn't have that magic look.

I handed my K100D down to my wife, but lately I've been thinking of picking up another one

Have you ever had a K-5?

If so, how does it compare to the K-3 in terms of colour rendition?

I had hoped that the K-3 would be an improvement on the K-5 in terms of colour rendition, but according to you it does not reach K100D performance.

My hypothesis is that colour accuracy is being sacrificed at the altar of high ISO performance (less noise) by making the Bayer-array colour filters less discriminating, but I don't have any particular evidence to support it.

I've never had a K-5, but I have had a K200D and K-7 (among others).

The thing about the K100D is unique to its 6MP sensor. That sensor was in a few other models as well. The color rendering is Fuji-esque, like Velvia film. It's a subjectively pleasing, though non-accurate rendering. The K-3 is a vast improvement accuracy-wise, but I like the vividness of the K100D better, that's all.

K110D images using one of my "Franken-lens" creations ... it's the designated "first test" DSLR. (x-post)

Here, a Will-Wetzlar projector lens stuffed inside a Vivitar zoom set at "macro" position (permanently*) ... minor LR4 adjustments and shot at high noon sun with on-board flash for extra boost ... good ol' K110D !

Nice images Jean, esp taken at high noon!

My wife took this shot while visiting the Anchorage, Alaska area earlier this month.

Great shots Jean and Paul!! Making me want to get out and shoot more! Just taught my K100D a new trick: EZ-Share card! Works great!

I just picked up my first DSLR, a K100D. I've been using a Pentax zx-50 and have a few lenses so going with another "K" mount was a no-brainer. I've gotta say that although I haven't gotten around to exploring the full menu I'm WAY happy with it. So far I've shot using the kit lens and a 135mm f2.8 and love the results.

The Tooth Fairy will Visit Tonight!

While at a birthday party this afternoon, my granddaughter was eating a cupcake and lost a front tooth. As usual, I had my K100DS taking pictures at the party, and was able to capture her a moment after her tooth came out!

K100DS, ISO200, fill flash (built-in), SMCP-M 35mm f2.8 @ f11

This camera keeps me happy!

-Joe-

P.S. I just picked up this Pentax-M 35mm f2.8 off the auction site for $15 including shipping, and am loving it! I had to work on it though to make it useable... Details here.

Cute shot, Joe - you captured the moment

Another shot from Alaska, taken by my wife with the K100D & 18-55 kit lens (plus a bit of PP in digiKam):

Well to make all of you k100d lovers feel a little better, I just sold my Sony A700 semi-pro and bought a used mint k100d because of all the good things I read about it in regard to photos out of the box.

The A700 just could not accurately render reds under its standard settings. My photos of red objects were rendered as more of an orange color. Kept having to tweak the settings to render red close to what I was seeing in the viewfinder. By the time I made the adjustments, the Kodak moment was gone.

I find the k100d renders reds very close to what I am seeing in its viewfinder. I know I can adjust Saturation or do PP if necessary but I have been satisfied with the default.

So the lesson here for me is that it is not always about MP or 1/8000 shutter speed or 40 segment metering but the algorithms that a camera uses for color rendition and white balance. You do not find out about these little idiosyncrasies until you are out in the field playing with settings.

Kudos for the Pentax k100d!

P.S. The only thing that is annoying me now is what looks like a hair or small scratch protruding from the lower left of the viewfinder above the display. No dust specks just the hair or scratch. Tried blowing it out but no luck. Have to learn not to be so picky since this does not effect my images lol.

Prom! My son will kill me!!

Graduates!

On this one I used an Af240z flash ! got for nothing! Just set to P on the camera and the flash meters the light!! Old school program flash style! I don't know if the newer models can do that still, but the k100D can!!
