Thanks for the additional comments. Hunt's is the local "shop" I was talking about (10-15 minute drive). The unfortunate part is I have to add 6 1/2 % for state sales tax in MA. I was wondering how much wiggle room the salesman has in the price. I don't think he could have any for the K-30 it is already discounted pretty well, but I do know the salesman offered to knock 100 bucks off the k-30 w/ 18-135 making it 849.95. These are the starting prices I was quoted:

K30 w/18-55 $499.99
K30 w/18-135 $949.99
K5II w/18-135 $1449.95
D7100 w/18-105 $1499.95

Except for some of the Amazon prices they are compatible with online prices, but again sales tax added.

The Amazon prices from unheard of place like DavisMAX in the screen shot below. When I look at buyer comments they are mostly good, but the bad ones are real horror shows. I guess I'm concerned about the hassle if something is wrong, but 375 + tax is a big difference.

Update, made a purchase

FWIW, Though I dearly wanted the K-5 II (or IIs), I decided to go with the K-30 for $499.99 (plus tax, grrrrr). As a new DSLR user the price was just to good to pass up. I hope to spend the cost differential on a good lens. I intend to start a separate thread for recommendations for a 2nd lens. Thanks for the guidance I received here.

Congratulations!

Now, I would start just taking lots of pictures of your favorite subjects, the ones you think you'll end up taking most pictures of, and then later sort them by focal range. Then you'll find out what prime would be best for you - 21, 28, 35 or 50mm for example. And get a nice prime in that range.

Real simple. Get the K30 at Hunts for $499 with 18-55 WR.....I went through the same dilemma and bought both. It was a waste for me to buy the K5IIs. I assure you....The K30 is more camera than anyone short of a Pro will ever master ! And....it IS built better than Nikkon or Cannon . Nice , solid , and has that quality hefty feeling in hand.

That's exactly what I did do. I definitely qualify as somebody "short of a Pro". However, I am the kind of buyer who will always wonder if I did the right thing, so I'll have 2nd thoughts forever.
My intention is to spend the differential cost on lenses. I've already ordered a prime 50mm/1.8 from Adorama and bought a used 50-300. That should hold me for quite a while.
At any rate, thanks for making me feel a little more secure about my decision.

Im actually considering selling the new K5IIs when it comes back from being repaired and getting another K30 at the prices they are going for. The fact my K5IIs only lasted 10 days has left a very very bad taste in my mouth. It was actually quite stressful making a decision , but its done and Im glad things turned out sour in a way for me.
I will miss the "Feelings" of having a top end pro like camera in my hot little hands.....but so what ! I figure I will be out a lot less dough when it gets broken or damaged (I shoot very low , fingers are in water a lot holding past cameras that got ruined). Both cameras are well qualified , so why take a chance with a model that's more expensive mainly for reasons other than image quality only ? I doubt neither on of us will ever be able to "See" the difference at all between the two models. In Pro hands , with good glass.....The K30 is amazing !
BTW.....I had a friend that has made lots of $$$$ shooting landscapes with a K20 much less a K30 ! He stiches several frames when needed, and prints large.....Amazing results !
YES.....just like myself you will always want what you think is better , but common sense will prevail. If you bought the K5IIs or K5II........then you would be thinking after a short while....Damn , I should have just bought the K30 !
