I vote for the 18-55 WR and M50/1.7 combo. You'll capture plenty of interesting images with the zoom in whatever the weather, and the 50/1.7 will provide an option in low-light conditions. If you have a last-minute question when you are packing, perhaps add the 50-200. The general view is that it has a lesser optical quality than the 55-300, but it's decent, WR, and lightweight.

During my city excursions, I rarely use anything longer than ~100 mm, but mainly 15-50 mm.

If it is a general pleasure trip the 18-55 WR cause you will rent the extra weight. For a dedicated photo trip as many as you can carry.

I did Scotland ports and highlights @ 21mm and left the rest on the ship.

Thanks for the advice all. The 28 is very old now and has some very slight hazing issues so think I will leave it is favour of the M 50 which is still pretty much mint and 18-55. For the telephoto I think I will just have to wait and see how my bag weight for the flights turn out and if I can squeeze it in will take the 300.

It is Rome I will be heading to for those that are wondering.
