I've heard that CameraWorld in downtown Portland has a good display now but I haven't been there since they re-declared their independence after their Ritz alliance. I'd like to drop in and see what their K-3 plans are - but I don't get downtown often. I see their website is still showing 'for preorder' so they should stock a few live copies..
I dropped by a few weeks ago before the k3 was official and asked them about the k50/k500 and they said they were getting them soon. So it seems like they are committed to Pentax for the time being. They have told me that they would match prices from authorized dealers, even internet stuff. Anyways, I have bought a few things from them this year and I will continue to support them because they are supporting us in a way. When I order the Sigma 18-35, it will be through them. There's one guy there w/ a k20d too so nice to know they have personal experience w/ Pentax build quality!

Decent stock and display. More goodies below the glass case.

None of my local stores that carry Pentax has the longer lenses on hand - they can get them in a couple of days. At the moment, I think there's only one 50-135 in town.

I'm curious whether the west coast of US/Canada has a history of being especially inclined towards Pentax. The Vancouver (BC) Craigslist typically adds 3-4x the number of used Pentax listings daily than what I see in other Canadian cities.

Fun question, but hard to answer definitively.

In Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver BC listings I see a lot of Pentax items compared with the eastern cities of my family and friends. Could be due, in part, to military coming back from Asian postings, to these cities being more affluent than many others with residents cycling through toys more rapidly, a larger proportion of the population being computer-savvy, or as you suggest more Pentax customers. I find the Craigslist items to be of high entertainment value on many levels.

Me neither, but I have been wondering about the same thing. The last time I was in there the staff was very pro-Pentax.

Closest 'real' store that probably carries Pentax in SoCal is probably the Denver headquarters.
Or Portland?

But yes, it is obvious from this thread that Canada at least has a much better Pentax presence at retail.
Well, at least you have a local store that stocks the product. I will likely (when I get employed) buy a K3 and a couple of lenses, but will give Camera World a chance to price match before buying online.

Don't know about there, but over here in Toronto you find A LOT of Kijiji ads with Pentax gear.
I guess Canada was more exposed to Pentax that US was!?

I remember before the digital era when Black's still had Pentax, most of the sales persons I talked to were more inclined recommending to use Pentax rather than other brands.

I did see a few point and shoot Pentaxes and an X 5 at a local Target. The X 5 was offered at $200, I was tempted but resisted.

I wonder it has a bit to do with the affordability of Pentax WR systems? I know that was a big factor for me - you never know what you'll need in our climate.

I doubt it. Most of the stuff I see on Craigslist is on the old side, preceding the WR era.
There are relatively few Pentax dealers of new equipment for both our areas. And I rarely ever see Pentax cameras out there in the world--when I do they are carried by tourists.

I don't think WR is a highly marketable or highly valued feature to much of the world beyond core Pentax and some Olympus DSLR users. I shoot sports outdoors in sometimes terrible weather with a Canon DSLR and lens and the less intensive WR aspects of this equipment hasn't gotten in my way. I'll throw the same rain protective sleeve over my K-3 (if it ever arrives) once the drops hit.

That's probably the largest Pentax display on the west coast.

Have you ever had your lens/camera fog up ? On my trip to Alaska a little over a year ago - my Sigma 18-200mm and red K-x fogged up with all the rain / humidity near the glaciers.
I did see one fearless person out on deck - but he had a Pentax 645D

Only the diopter and not too often, I don't recall ever having the mirror or inside parts getting foggy--and I ride a ferry twice a day almost every day and am outside shooting frequently.

All right! Gotta use that camera on an Alaska trip regardless of the environment.

Lots of places here in Vancouver sell Pentax. (London Drugs , Kerrisdale Cameras, Broadway Cameras, Lens & Shutter, Leo's Camera, Gastown Photo…)
The nearest to me is a 5 minute walk and all are within a 10 - 15 minute drive.

Phil.
