there are settings on-board flash exposure compensation, however it doesn't apply to manual lenses. the only thing i've thought of was taking up the flash with some paper just to dampen it out and testing it to see which apertures work well with it. a bit of a bummer, but i guess it also is a sign that i should get a proper flash too :P

Yes I know you can close th apeture down, and it almost works, but the flash still overwhelms the shot. I've a Nikon SB 600 flash and a stofen cover for it and a few other old speedlights, time for some experiments I think!

The last time this topic came up, Woof and I calculated out and cross checked an exposure table for the onboard flash. I haven't used it a whole lot, but most settings seem to be good to a half stop or so. Here's a copy if you're interested:
