I wish it was WR, Ray, but it's just the standard version.

My first 18-55mm was a version 1 that came with the *ist DS. It was fundamentally unsharp at any focal length or aperture, and I ended up binning it.

My second was the Samsung D-Xenon version. It was reasonably sharp but had a nasty bluish-purple cast to every shot I took with it -- perhaps Samsung used different coatings than Pentax? I gave that one away to a friend.

Third was the 18-55mm WR. Again it was fairly sharp, but it tended to give a pinkish cast to shots. Its rendering style just didn't suit me personally, and I ended up donating it to a charity shop.

I seem to have finally struck lucky with the fourth one. It has a neutral colour rendering and more subtle contrast characteristics than the others, so that finally I've got an 18-55mm that captures shots in something close to the way I naturally see things.
You sure have had a run of bad luck there, Dave. It is good that you now have one that is producing results that you are happy with. That last image you posted looks great for one that had no extra processing. I would say that you now have a keeper...finally.

I love mine . If you can nail focus, yes the lens can be pretty sharp. Dave will tell you it's even sharper if you remove the little clear filter from the rear of the lens (something I've not tried yet).

I use mine with my *ist D far more than with the K10D. I find the green-button metering to be much more accurate on the *ist D, while the K10D requires a bit of futzing. (something fairly well documented about the K10-K20 series metering) I have several images in my Flickr stream, and posted here in the Soviet Lens Club as well.

It breaks my heart to see the K10D Club sliding halfway down page 2 in the thread listings, so I was determined to take at least some kind of photo today.

Nice images on this page! I've been neglecting my K10 as well, so here's an oldie (2012) with the DAL50-200:

Hey guys, so I've been enjoying my K10D, using legacy lenses, and recently, I've been asked to be a nightclub photographer by one of my friends who is a DJ....now, I've been using the built-in flash with a Takumar 17 f4, however, I would like to know what external flashes you guys would recommend for that type of photography, with dodgy club lighting. Here's a photo that I took a few days ago, and even though it looks good, the flash is way too intrusive IMO.

Thank you all in advance

Yeah you can make that much more intimate

Since you will be using older lenses, Get any old flash that you can have manual control over, Then hit the strobist up and practise practise practise practise. :P

There a bunch out there. I have been having fun with the Older Pentax AF200T's

That have a couple of power settings.

1/1
1/2
1/4
1/8

I have been paying $30-40 bucks for them. I believe these are really the only pentax flashes with this wide variety of manual control?

Your flashes need not be pentax mind you! These were just cheap! And there certainly is some sense in investing in some wireless capable TTL AUTO this and that for when you eventually grow into it.

But for the moment..

Shots below with a K10 and usually just a single AF200T in an umbrella or softbox, usually set at 1/2 power or below.

Flashes are fun!

Don't forget you can reduce the built in flash power for more intimate shots, see page 172 of the manual. Might be all you need.
