Just some more afternoon CU. K10D and DA* 16-50. Xpst.

I'm using Lightroom CC which does everything I need. There's a post where the latest version of PS Elements is available for $69.

The K10 is one camera I've kept. I currently have a K10, a K-S1 and a K3. Pretty happy with this selection. I also have a K100D kicking around somewhere, but my place is organized chaos and I haven't seen it for months! I use a lot of old lenses - my mainstay on my K10 is the venerable Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 zoom. It's rarely off the camera. Other favorites are my 35mm Pentax Limited macro f2.8, the Pentax Limited 77mm f1.8, the Pentax-A 50mm f2.8 macro, the Pentax-M 50mm f1.4, and the Pentax-M 200mm f4. Toss in my 17mm Tamron Adaptall, and I can do about anything.

I have one concession to the "other guys". I have a 17mp Rebel because only Canon makes that insanely incredible MP-E lens that operates only at 1x-5x power, turning your camera into a low powered microscope. Wish Pentax would come up with something like that, but I guess there's not a great market. Not even Nikon does, either.

I'll be joining this club shortly. I just bought a k10 from a member selling his in the Marketplace. First camera I have owned that doesn't have the scene modes. And those photos you guys are uploading look great. I hope mine will be as good.

Congratulations! And I've seen your pictures, I'm sure that you'll soon be teaching us a thing or two

Thank you! But you guys will have to teach me about settings. I shoot RAW. Is there anything I should be aware of with this K10?

Looking forward to seeing your work with the K10D.

Expose to protect the highlights. If you nail the exposure, the 10MP CCD is beautifully smooth in the way it retains detail right at the transition into pure white, as in wtlwdwgn's (Steve's) cloud shots above. You can pull a stop or two of detail back out of the shadows, but really you have to forget about the modern obsession with having visible detail right down into the deepest shadows, and embrace the creative potential of pure blacks. The great thing about shooting raw with the K10D is that the files tend to need very little work in post processing. Hopefully you'll enjoy the camera's unique retro charm.

Here's a recent snap of a mare and foal with the Palinar 200mm -- best 5 I ever spent on a lens.

I shoot RAW too and that is a good choice. I can't add any more to what Dave has said. Follow that advice and it will be hard to go wrong. I'll post a couple of images taken yesterday and processed in Lightroom CC.

I'm sorry guys, I should have mentioned this isn't my first DSLR, I have a K-50, a K-x and a K-30. Check my flickr. But thanks Dave, for the suggestions anyway, some newbie might get something from your advice. I started in photography in 1995 with a K1000.

And my question was about camera settings in general, not how to shoot photos, I do that quiet well.

On the K10, after I take a photo, the LCD displays the photo normally but there is the histogram information on the bottom of the photo, can I turn that off and if so, how?

P.S. I downloaded the pdf manual but couldn't find that info in there.

It's on page 197, "Setting the Instant Review." Uncheck "Histogram." You can change the playback screen by pressing the Info button.

Thanks. The problem was I thought I had unchecked it when I first got the camera but when I took a photo it was still there. That's why I asked because I thought there might be something else I needed to do too. Come to look at the settings again, and it's back checked. Unchecked now and it's gone.
