As far as what I use - Corel Aftershot Pro works really well, I find, with CCD cameras. For my K-S1 I have to use either Rawtherapee or PDCU5, as Corel doesn't even support the K-S1...
I created my own presets in Corel AP - basically stumbled upon something I liked and then created a couple small variations. The black and white one is the only one where, after having applied my preset, I used a film emulation plugin that it has for a Kodak black and white film (I think I used Tri-X developing for 12 minutes, which is why it added quite a bit of contrast).
Speaking of contrast, I take contrast away - learned that from you. I take away a lot of contrast, but that gets added back with the color curve that I apply. The color curve is basically 80% of it, and the rest is the lower contrast as I said, and dealing with any problems in the darker areas.
