A new groyne (stone seawall) is being built at one of our local beaches to try to stop the sand washing away. Construction has only just started on this $2 million project and I intend to document its progress. K10D and Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.0 DC Macro HSM.

Will it work? Who knows. But if it doesn't it is going to be hard to unscramble the egg.

maybe, but the northern side of the groin will most likely suffer erosion.

Ray,

Is this the Contemporary version of the Sigma 17-70, or the previous one? Either way I am pretty impressed with the output with the K10D, it seems like it's a very good match. Maybe my GAS is lighting up again and I need a new walkaround lens? Maybe selling my DA 16-45 and Tokina 19-35 would get me one...

CR, I believe Ray owns the C-version with HSM. I owned the original screwdrive version (wish I still did), and I can tell you it is indeed a very nice lens. Ray gets some great images with his!

The pathway home...there's a bench just barely visible thru the grass. F35-70:

He does indeed.

The pre-C version of the Sigma 17-70 was also HSM and was also f/2.8-4 (yours, I believe, was f/2.8-4.5). That is why I was asking... some reviews say the C version is better, but Lenstip said the previous version was better. Looking at flickr photos I thought the newer C was sharper at one important FL: 70mm and f4, where portraits looked great. I've thought about this Sigma for a while, but I'd have to sell the 16-45mm... and I haven't been able to bring myself to it. 16mm is very useful indoors nice and wide, and low distortion even when people are near the edges of the frame! the perfect indoor party lens when combined with a flash. I think I'd miss the Pentax colors, too. But now I'm also getting terrific results with the Sigma 30 1.4 Art, so I keep thinking about adding more Sigmas to the bag... I'm so glad Pentax still shows commitment to their large APS-C base with new lenses like the DA*11-18mm f/2.8 which is coming up soon. I think I'll stay fine with APS-C for now...

That's correct. I actually sought out the screwdrive version so I could use it with my old 6 mpx bodies. I acquired a super clean copy from member SpecialK. It's a solid lens and a bit front-heavy, but still very manageable. Very sharp from wide open with a useful pseudo-macro mode. It doesn't have the Pentax colors but that can be mostly remedied in post. btw, I recently purchased a very clean used DA16-45/4. Really nice and 16mm is very handy! I have to admit not being totally blown away, however. I think I was a bit spoiled having an exceptional copy of the 18-55 kit lens! But the 16-45 will be getting plenty of use Oh, and like you, I'm firmly entrenched in aps-c land.

Here's Doc with the 17-70 DC macro, at f/3.5:

Hi CR,

Yes, it is the Comtemporary version which accepts the USB Dock (which I have). I have always been impressed with this lens on the K10D. I bought it as an upgrade of my DA 18-55mm WR and it instantly improved my images. It is larger and a bit heavier but it is worth it for the wider aperture, 1mm extra at the wide end and 15mm at the long end. The silent HSM focussing is nice and that was OK with me as I don't have anything older than the K10D. Since I got it the poor old 18-55 has not seen much use and must be feeling unloved. I keep telling myself that I must use it more often. One day...

Nice. I like the HSM in my Sigma 30 1.4 Art, I think it's probably about the same. Not completely silent but silent enough.

Now to think about 16-45 vs Sigma 17-70...

And just sell that 18-55 Not worth keeping a lens you aren't using...

I don't expect that I will see the 18-55mm WR. I still like it. And I still have my original version 1 18-55mm that came with the K10D.

Maybe the following might influence your choice of the Sigma 17-70. I sometimes feel that I overprocess my images so today, after attending day 1 of Chromefest, the only processing I did was to resize the JPGs SOOC. K10D JPGs are good enough to do that.

Ray, what in-camera jpeg settings were you using for those shots, for example: vivid/natural, contrast, saturation, sharpness?
