However if you perhaps do have the room for another toy, this seems like a scenario where the SMC-A 70-210mm f4 lens would excel, and it's a cheap toy to add to the lens drawer... I know you like that Tamron and you get good use out of it, but nowadays if I'm out in the sun and want good colors and contrast with decent PF control, I've been taking that old manual SMC-A lens and the Tamron 70-300 nowadays pretty much stays at home all the time...

Thank you for your kind comments, CR. And thank you for the points you have made re the SMC-A 70-210mm lens but I don't think I will be adding that to my collection for the following reasons:
a. I like my automation too much and I need fast AF in this situation. I also use my Sigma 150-500 on the K-3 on sail days.
b, I need the extra length of the 70-300 Tamron even on APS-C. That Tamron is a cheapish lens but it performs well for me and I know its strengths as I have had it since 2008.
I have had thoughts about a possible upgrade but I really don't NEED one. I know that is not a valid reason when one has LBA.
