Nice work on the comparison, Ray. Maybe I should buy an El Cheapo again...

Does any of you have experience with the Sigma/Tamron 17-50 and the old DA* 16-50? I am considering one of those to replace my ailing DA 16-45....

Nice shot, it has a 1950's look to it IMO. I've always been pleasantly surprised by what the kit lens can do. If I want to travel light with the camera it's my first choice.

Now that's a serious looking coffee machine. Mine's a quadruple espresso in a nice big mug, please. . . topped up with a bit more espresso if needed.

That's epic. I'm guessing either Madeira or Lanzarote?

Thanks, Russ. I think that it's better than anything made in the 1950s.

Yes, it is a very serious machine. It took a bit of getting used to. The best I can do is a double shot but if you can wait a little longer I can do two double shots in a bit mug with room for a bit more if you so desire. That would be getting quite close to rocket fuel IMHO.
Just let me know when you will be here and I'll get the machine warmed up and ready to go.

Whoa! That is a spectacular view and the kit lens has captured it well. Those farm fields right down to the cliff edge look a bit dangerous.

I have some experience with early 16-50 Pentax lenses. Pentax had serious trouble with the first batches of these lenses.
It took three samples before I got one that seemed OK. After that experience I decided not to buy one.

The Sigma 17-50 is an excellent lens with better performance wide open than the Pentax 16-50 lens.
Besides that the Sigma lens is about half the price of the Pentax lens.
Only advantage the Pentax lens has it is more wide angle.

Yes it's Madeira, I had to get a cable car up although I'm sure there's a road too.

I was shooting into the morning sun and there was haze so the initial shot was disappointing. I came back to it now as I am running a trial copy of DXO Photolab 3 and it has a 'clear view' option which together with local adjustments brought out a lot of hidden details in the distance.

Thanks Ray, Health and Safety is a bit of novelty in some European countries!

Almost two whole months now of endless blue skies and sunshine. Which is lovely, of course, but so un-Dartmoor-like that it's feeling very strange. And doing photography in bright sunlight turns out to be difficult.
