Cannot go wrong with a Pentax-F 35-70/3.5-4.5 = cheap autofocus zoom from film era. The Pentax-F 50/1.7 should also do you well...

I mostly use my K10D with M42 glass. I've used the DAL 55-300/4-5.8 with it and does well - that zoom should be under $150...

Viv 55/2.8 Macro K10D at infinity

This body-lens combo renders pretty well.
Thanks for your reply. I've looked at adapting m42 lenses as I already have some I use on my Fujis. Is the official adapter worth the extra cost over third party adapters?

YES. Again - YES. Every single cent, and add some.

Looking at it again... I don't think either picture looks very inspiring, I don't know if it's the light or what... the K-1 has colors that are a bit brighter and has a bit more sense of depth, but looking at the texture of the flowers, they look a bit like plastic flowers. If that makes sense... the colors of the K10D seem to be a bit more washed out (which is also a bit odd) but it looks a bit more natural. I know everyone sees colors and textures differently so that's just how I see it...
Fair call, those sample crops were unedited and the additional fraction-of-a-stop difference of 1/200th vs 1/180th sync speeds between the cameras may attribute to the washed out look. In any case the Pentax K10D gains a bit of DR with ETTR, the K1 not so much. Furthermore, as I said in the CCD camera thread: Neither K1 or K10D presented the subject or the background faithfully. But I will mention with the appropriate camera profile instead of the one ACR uses, the K10D took the least amount of effort to "correct".

The Final result:

Pentax K10D - SMCP-FA77mm f/1.8 Limited @ f/8 ISO 100 1/180th

That one indeed looks nice

Interesting observations. I really wish Sony had done a full frame CCD sensor, or that someone other than Leica had used that beautiful sensor in the M9. But then I think a lot of us would be going gaga over it and it would cost almost as much as an M9... which I think only doesn't cost more because of the sensor issue - and it still costs a lot.

Probably off topic, but I see that lens going quite cheaply... but I still can't think why I would use that instead of, say, my 35 and 70 Limiteds (with a 50 in the middle). There's obviously a lot of people who swear by it - should I get one and find out why?.... I think on a K-1 it would be a no-brainer, like a "normal prime with quite a bit of flexibility on either side"...

I wish I had your problem mate.

You see, I lack the limited glass... Hence I cannot tell you it is worth it based on your condition.

I can tell you - I have a great 35mm in the XR Rikenon - but I do not have anything prime from 58mm-90mm. I have a Viv S1 zoom that I love wide open at 85mm (it is my cheat 85mm glass).

You likely do not need this lens... but it is great when packing light on a trip that you do not want to risk the expensive glass. Honestly, the lens is awesome.

+1 Ed. It's small, light & unobtrusive - sharp and colorful, with that "vintage rendering", and instant near-macro ability - what's not to love?

I bought them about a year apart, and each one was about 170 shipped... I had searches on these lenses for years so keep looking, you never know when a good deal will come up....

Some fun with long exposure. I didn't have a cable release so I used the 2-second self timer for taking this picture.
