I was digging thru my older files, and found another shot of that tiny red bloom - this one is at iso 100. Shot using a Quantaray (Sigma) 28-90 macro:

Pierre; that is an amazing shot of an item we don't give a second thought to! Very excellent; I love the background color accenting the knot!

Question; what Auto Sensitivity do you use for outdoor photos, birds etc? Mine was set to include 1600 (full range). I was using Tav F8, 250 shutter.

This would be with a 400mm lens. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what settings to use, including TAv, Av, P, etc.

Thanks!

Carol

I don't set auto-ISO on my K10D, but if I did, I'd probably peak it at 800. That's the highest I'll set iso, and really only for emergency use...YMMV

The K10D can be noisy above ISO 400 but it's more important to get the proper exposure regardless of the ISO. The noise is certainly better than the grain in TX 400 pushed two stops. Noise can be dealt with in PP to an extent so I personally don't worry about it too much. Just my $0.02.

Thanks Paul & Steve; I really want to get the best I can out of the K10D, with the Tokina 400mm.

Here's one from today: This was heavily cropped, and I really don't know if it's noise or grain in it.

The EXIF says it was shot at ISO 125 so it should have looked OK but if you crop heavily then that is what you are going to get.

Understood; I'm just trying to understand whether it's noise or grain in the image.

Actually that's a pretty darn good image especially if cropped like you say. Cropping will magnify any flaws including noise. A little NR should remove it but don't expect miracles. DSLRs don't have 'grain' like film does but "grain like" noise is a good trait as opposed to the blotchy noise often seen. Good shooting with that combo.

Nice work - you did well with some challenging subjects using the long lens! As Steve suggested, see if some noise reduction can improve your images somewhat.

Paul, thank you! I'm pretty new using Elements 11, so will see what I can do. It's a little confusing as to what the difference is using "Unsharp", vs "Sharpening".

Another thing that challanged these photos, there was bright snow surrounding the birds, so I'm pleased that they turned out, despite the bright backgrounds. I really appreciate you and others taking the time to help me become a better photographer!
