Depth of Field Preview and old lenses

This forum is great. I've been using the Depth of Field preview and manual focus for close up shots. I have a DA 18-55 kit lens and of course my K10D. I was wondering if I can use Depth of Field Preview with the older manual focus A lenses? Also, is there a different focus screen that would be brighter with manual focus lenses. i've done a little research on Katzeye, but they seem to be out of business; maybe there is a trick to Depth of field preview when using small stops like F22. In bright light all is well, but during the good light, it's hard to focus.

depth of field preview with A lens's? You know I've never tried, BUT QUICK HACK!

Just eject any k-mount lens slightly, as if you are to remove it, and it will stop down. BAM! :P

I do as such when playing with macro stuff just to check too.

As for focus screens! YES! I have a Cannon S-type focus screen that has been cut to fit by these guys.

Focusing Screen

It was the single best thing I did to my K10. at wider aperture's It's wonderfully bright and I know have a much clearer indication of what is in focus when using MF glass. Like I can see the difference between f1.4 and f1.8

Re the M lens drill hack.. Yes I think that achieves the same result, but thus locking the lens in pace so the lever never touches the cameras controls. The other way to do this of course is to just remove the lever from the lens.. or cut it off... That method is good though as it lets you use it in either way.

And re the screen, yeah give it a crack!

Pulling the power switch round to the depth of field preview position certainly works with M lenses, assuming the camera is set to optical preview. I don't know if it works with A lenses because I don't own any. Can't be doin' with all that new-fangled auto-exposure frippery.

Yes, the K10D DOF position does work with A lenses. There's always the M mode for manual exposure.

That's a wonderfully eerie looking sky Paul. The kind of thing you see in movies just before the flying saucer invasion begins.

Cool picture PaulH

The other night I took a couple of thunder clouds. I was sitting a my desk, just happened to look out the window and the cloud had great color, great out line, and was gone before I got out there to shot. Damn!. The shots were not worth posting.

I know that feeling well of not quite getting there in time to catch the light. The best light here on Dartmoor is when there's mostly cloud cover but with occasional sunlight bursting through, especially late in the day when the sun on the horizon will sometimes light the clouds from underneath. The problem is that the most magical effects of the light only ever last for a few seconds and then they've gone forever. So it's landscape shooting, but it's landscape shooting where you have to be ready to catch the light the moment you see it. Spend a couple of seconds too long setting up the camera and you've lost the light.

I couldn't tell you how many wonderful moments of never-to-be-repeated light I've missed by just not being fast enough. But it's many.

Hello all

I feel I need to confess something...

I went and bought a k5.

Now now calm down, I'm not sure what this means for me, but if you have wondered what xyz lens looks like on a k5 compared to a k10, I'm happy to have them play dress up

I look forward to coming back here in a few days to complain about how the k5 is different

In the meantime, I'll have a kats eye focus screen up in sale thread shortly along with some other k10 bits and pieces...
