I have to ask the really obvious things first, so please understand that these questions are NOT intended to insult your intelligence:

Is there actually a battery installed in the grip? (The grip hasn't got a built-in battery, it needs a D-Li150.)
Have you swapped the batteries between the body and the grip to see if you get the same result?
Have you tried it with no battery in the body, but a battery in the grip only?

Again, sorry if these seem like insultingly obvious questions. I just want to make sure you've tried those steps.
I have just done some tests on my K10D and I can confirm:
  1. The grip does not come with a battery and you must buy a battery for it.
  2. The images presented indicate that there is no battery in the grip.
  3. Swapping the battery from the body to the grip works and it will light up as such in the menu.

Thanks for the confirmation, Ray. My interpretation of the problem was also that there's no battery inserted into the grip as there should be. Either that or a battery is physically in there but it's not making proper contact and isn't being detected as present.

That one's absolutely epic, Paul. Like a perfectly lit moment from a movie. A classic of your personal photographic style at its very best.

Many thanks, Dave! I'm not even sure what "style" I have, if any . Around the mobilepark I'm known as "that guy standing in the street taking pictures".

That's a great one that seems very appropriate for these crazy times we're all living through right now.

That's exactly why you've got a personal style. You show us your part of the world as it looks to you, and nobody else would see it in exactly the same way. I always know when a photo is one of yours without even needing to see any name next to it.

Damn, is this what happens when I'm self-isolating from covid and I'm stone cold sober at 11.30 at night? I start being nice to people? Yeuchh!

That is high praise, Dave - thanks again, I truly appreciate it. There are a few members here I can ID by their photos, yourself included! BTW, the gold Honda was a stroke of luck, that to me really adds something. I was framing the shot and heard him coming up behind me. I waited just long enough for him to enter the frame, then I snapped away

No insult taken...I should have stated all I tried. Grip and body have a charged battery. If I put either in the body they both work. If I put either in the grip with none in the body I get no power. When a battery is in both grip (with contacts facing up) and the body the battery setting works on auto, grip first or body first.

Actually there is a battery in the grip. So my grip is not communication with the body. If I put either battery in the body alone they work and show 100% charge. Either battery in the grip with none in the body doesn't work...though the grip does fire the shutter when batteries are in both.

I did try cleaning the battery contacts and the grip battery contacts. I also lightly sanded the grip pins. I do have a fiberglass brush...to clean the body pin contacts...but I need to find it...lol. I saw the damn thing every day this weekend and the minute I needed it I can't find it. Does anyone know what pins on the grip are the power? This would rule out the grip and tell me the body pins socket needs cleaning.

Ok I fixed the battery grip. I took it apart and I found there is a little rubber plunger that when attached to the body pressed down and connects contacts that act as a power cutoff. I tried flexing the contacts to be closer but that didn't work...so I put a tiny droplette of UV resin to the tip of the plunger...so it pushes down just a little bit more...and that did the trick.

An innovative solution. Necessity is the mother of invention. Glad to hear how well that worked for you. The K10D is much better balanced with the grip on it IMHO.

I took the photography club on an outing today to Mt Penang Gardens. Mt Penang - Things to Do
It was a beautiful sunny day so the K10D was a natural choice. Sigma 17-70 and Tamron 70-300.
