Very tasty!

Just found a serious problem with K10d number 1.
The backup battery seems to be exhausted.
Everytime I change the camera battery I have to reset date and time.
Does not bother me much.

Number 1 came with the American Katzeye viewing screen.
It is an improvement over the standard Pentax screen to me.
The split helps manual focusing a lot.
Its a rare option these days.

A pity these screens are no longer available.

My K20D started doing that before I sold it, but if I swapped the battery fast I could avoid it...

Is there an easy way to swap the internal battery? Does anyone know?

AFAIK the only Pentax DSLR to have a user-replaceable clock/settings battery is the *ist D. There's a round access door in the camera base - the battery is a common disc cell available at drugstores (I forget which battery #).

Autumnal decay - DA18-55 on K10D:

Looking elsewhere on the net, some suggest there might be a capacitor instead. Which still doesn't answer your question, either way it may not be fixable.

I didn't know that the *ist D had a replaceable settings battery. Thanks for that info, Paul. There definitely is no mention in the manual of such a battery on the K10D. If it were there, I would have found it because I have looked for it.
Both of the ancient Canon DSLRs I own have that feature and I am a bit disappointed that Pentax did not carry on with it past the *ist D. I also have a Pentax X90 bridge camera which also forgets the date when the battery is removed.

It is much easier to replace a button battery than to rely on an inaccessible capacitor which may or may not fail.

Good results from a fast lens.
No doubt the Canon 55 1.2 is an excellent lens.

Like you I am often tempted to use lenses from other makers on my Pentax bodies.
So far I left it cowardish to a couple of Sigma lenses factory fitted with K mounts.
Both Sigma lenses I own, the 17-50 2.8 and the 18-200 are good performers.

No doubt it can be fixed.
The question is what will it cost.

The average price I paid for the three K10d bodies I got is 60 euro.
That includes the low clicks, only 3900, number 3 body.

Number 1, the body with the date back up problem is my favorite body to use out doors.
No need to change the battery often. Resetting the date refreshes my memory using the menu too.

Converting the Canon FD lenses is a fairly expensive proposition, and not cost effective except for the very best lenses. However, I love this copy of the lens, having used it for many years on the film camera F-1 and some other Canon bodies as well. When I switched to Pentax, I really wanted to keep using my old favorite, and this was the result.

My k10d is showing card locked when I turn it on which I understand is normally dirty contacts n the card slot.

Does anybody have any tips for cleaning the contacts?

Can I safely squirt a bit of contact cleaner in there?

Hello I've had my K10d since it came out and love it. I've been recently trying to get into long exposure photography. I'm looking for an app on my phone that will work as a remote using my phones IR blaster for this. Does anyone have a suggestion. I have found a few that connect but they won't keep the shutter open.
For the K10D you can build your own remote cable, is really easy and inexpensive. I made mine with 1 push button for the focus, 1 for the shutter and 1 switch parallel to the shutter button so you can lock it in bulb mode

Google about it, I think is the same method for the old Cannon Xti

Does not card locked mean the card is locked and does not store new images?
Look at the side of the card and shift the control towards the contact side of the memory card.

I do not think spraying contact cleaner in the camera slot is a good idea.

It's not the card as it reads and writes fine in my other DSLR body.

Contact cleaner is not allways what it promisses.
Try to get a good CC, spray some CC in the cards contacts and insert it several times in the camera.
That is a safer way to clean the contacts of the camera I think.

Did you try an other card to check the camera?
