. Can happen for a number of reasons...
.... and yes, I think reducing contrast can sometimes be a winning move. Especially if your lens is already low in contrast, or you already have the soft lighting, and you compose around a subject that will do better with the soft outlines. I do like the soft wintry forest in the background there.
I've sometimes found that when I do get in these patches and try doing things differently I'll get insights into a look or approach that ends up being fruitful. Sometimes I just think I'm trying too hard, and it's better just to put everything down for a couple of days or a week. When I start looking again possible photos start appearing. In the meantime, if I haven't been looking at them, I might find that the photos I had been taking weren't so bad, or I can quickly see why they weren't working, or maybe neither, and I just have to grudgingly let go of them and move on. It might be years before I realise why they weren't working, or maybe would never work. If I remember to look back at them that is....
