Pentax Planning a Consumer version of K-3?

Anyone know if Pentax is planning a consumer version of K-3, ex. like the Nikon 3200 or 5200 is a consumer version of the 24MP Nikon 7100.

Thanks

Hmmm? That'll be the K50/500.

I think there are some members of this forum who would suggest that Pentax produce a "pro" version first.

Sorry...could not resist...heavy, heavy sarcasm aimed at the ongoing discussion of what constitutes pro gear.

I'm afraid they can't - they already used the k-30 name on the camera that was superseded by the K-50.
Painted into a corner… eeerk!

I am not fully sure of Pentax "consumer" dslrs ... I mean, just be honest and look at the K-500. it's trapped in between two worlds. Is not as capable as the K50 (lack of WR, focusing viewfinder dots, etc) so you know its trying to be a consumer/cheaper DSLR. But then again, the controls and interface are trying to be a prosumer DSLR. What I am trying to say is that the k-500 will make neither the "consumer" or "prosumer" happy.

If pentax is planning in releasing a consumer dslr they need to revise the interface. My parents have a d3200 and the "guide" mode is just brilliant for someone that does not want to put time or effort in learning technical aspects (like my parents). Having said that, I LOVE the interface of my K-30 (because I do want to learn the technical aspects).

In reality, i think what they need to do is take the k-50's or even k-30s body and offer it at $499 and get rid of their K-500. Look what apple does with their ipads and iphones... They keep the low end/old model as a step down/cheaper version.
Now they're offering the ipad air and ipad 2 for example.

Heck, Pentax could just offer :
Pentax K-3 FF For the PRO
Pentax K-3 For the enthusiast that likes the new stuff
Pentax k-5ii/iis For the connoisseur
Pentax K-50 for the beginners/amateurs

I dont see the problem in thinking of Pentax as a premium brand (no cheap build camera like Canon)

Honestly, I don't see the 24 megapixel sensor as giving a whole lot of benefit to the average photographer. You really need high quality glass to see a bump in performance over the K50/500 sensor. I would like to see Pentax work some connectivity into a K50/500 sequel. I think that seems to be the big next thing, but as far as going from 16 to 24, I just don't see it, except to continue the megapixel races...

The K-3 is a consumer version of the K-3.

Neh, too easy. It takes the sport out of it.

But in my honest opinion, the K-3 really is a pro level piece of gear. The 200,000 guarenteed shutter actuations by itself already puts it in that category.

Nah, they can still use K-300, K-30ii, K-30iiS, K-30 Super...

But to address the OP's question, which is "will Pentax release a 24MP consumer body", I think the answer is probably, eventually. Pentax is very close-mouthed about future designs.

In the past, the top-tier sensor has gradually made its way into the lower-level bodies: K10D->K200D->K-m, K-5->K-30->K-500. The K20D/K-7 sensor did not because of the excellent 12MP that went into the K-x/K-r. But I don't think they are going to hurry to replace the K-50 with a 24MP version just to play the numbers game. Based on past intervals, the K-50/500 won't be due for replacement until mid-late 2014.

Well I hope there will be a K-5 III (same 16mp sensor but the electronics from the K-3).

The cheapest offering at the time for a camera with kitlens is the Sony A3000 for 249 euro while the K-30 will set you back 529 euro. That is a very big gap for what we all feel is a different camera, but for those who are looking for an entry level camera to toy around in the family it is a major issue.

Pentax should just make a k-50/500 follow-up with the 16mp sensor with de K-3 anti aliasing tech and some of the other improvements. 24mp for medium and low end is overkill en just serves to fill up hard disk space. Since K-30 is already taken call it K-32 and K-320.
