Focal length is missing

I was wondering: using my SMC-M lenses, the body asks for a focal length for SR to work, but then when looking at the EXIF, the focal length is missing. Am I missing something too?

It works for me. What is your process work-flow? Perhaps it is getting dropped in the process?

I shoot in raw with my K10D and import the images into Lightroom. Lightroom is able to display the focal length along with some of the rest of the Exif data. If I export from Lightroom (e.g. to TIFF), there is the option to strip some or all of the Exif.

There may also be limitations in the software that you use to display the Exif.

Well, I know it is not the computer software issue, because the focal length is not displayed even on camera body in preview mode.
I just mount the M lens and turn the body on. It asks me for a focal length, I choose it and press OK. That's it.
Is it a firmware problem maybe? I have a K100D.

Are you sure the exif data should record the focal length ?

When using the M lens the camera has no idea what lens you have on the front of the camera.

I guess you are assuming because you give the camera a focal length for the shake reduction, that will be recorded on the exif. I cannot recall if this is the case or not. I will check when I get home.

Yes the focal lenght you choose turning on must be in the exif data, be shure to not
turn off SR after you put the focal lenght. I own a k100d Super hope it's same on a k100.

Not sure if this is relevant but I have recently been using a Sigma 70-300 with a Kenko x2 MC7 TC. I have to use this combination in MF. The SR menu comes up automatically on the camera and I can select the focal length of 600mm, but only 300mm shows on the exif data.

I would try updating the firmware to the current version. It sounds like you are going through the right steps, and my k100d records the focal length in the exif for my manual lenses.

My K10D quotes the SR focal length in the EXIF.

strange, looking at my photos w/ my 50s, some EXIFs have the focal length and others don't on my K100D 1.02
it might be because i bypassed the focal length selection menu by pressing the shutter button (because it already said 50) instead of pressing the OK button

Well, I googled for K100D firmware and here is the first result:

from Pentax Imaging - Software & Firmaware Updates

QuoteQuote:
K100D
PENTAX K100D FIRMWARE UPDATE VERSION 1.02
VERSION HISTORY
Version 1.02:
  • Improved support for SDHC memory cards.
Version 1.01:
  • Support for SDHC memory cards.
  • Focal length input into the Shake Reduction menu can now be displayed accurately in Pentax Photo Browser 3.
I think, this was not the Pentax Photo Browser problem, but camera problem...
