Couple of questions about the K20D....

I currently have a K10D, with the extra battery grip. I'm thinking of either upgrading to a K20D, or maybe buying a new body only and keeping the K10D for a second body.

My questions are:

1. Does the K20D take the same battery as the K10D, or is it a different battery?

2. Does the K20D use the same extra battery grip as the K10D?

In other words - will my existing battery grip and spare batteries fit the K20D, or will I be up for new ones?

Thanks in advance

Ben - many thanks You ARE quick!

K20D - here I come.....

One last question - is there any difference between the Pentax 18-250 lens and the Tamron 18-250? I heard rumours that they are in fact the same lens, but with the different badging.

Here in Australia, there is a price difference - not much (about $60 or so) - but I'm wondering if the extra is just to have the Pentax name on the lens? One of our online discount camera retailers has the K20D complete with a Pentax 18-250 lens for $2099. The body only is $1539, so the lens works out to about $560. All prices in Aussie dollars (current exchange rate to the US dollar is about 91 Aussie cents).

Thanks again for your help.

Optically, they are the same. Mechanically, they are different. And the Pentax has the Pentax coating vs the Tamron coating.

Check the warranties on the two lenses. Here in the States, the Tamron comes with a 6 year warranty which is hard to ignore. Also, be aware that the Pentax version is (IIRC) the only DA lens that doesn't have the Quick Shift focus adjust feature, where you can manually adjust the focus without switching to Manual. This implies to me that the lenses are more alike than you think. I've even read a report from Jim King (major collector of all things Pentax) that the coatings on the Pentax version "look different" from the coatings on other Pentax lenses, suggesting that the coatings are the same on the two versions of the lens.

Oh, and get the K20D. To me, it's a major upgrade over the K10D. More resolution, less PF, faster/more accurate AF (even AF-C), Live View, AF adjustments for 20 different lenses, hot pixel mapping, higher ISO with lower noise. I'm very happy with my K20D.

The Battery for both the K10D and K20D is the D-LI50. So Yes, it works in both.

The grip is the same.

Just buy the camera, everything else you have fits both.

Unfortunately, it can fit both at the same time . Seriously, I really miss the grip whenever I pick up my tiny K10D. It just doesn't have the same feel anymore, especially when I take a vertical shot.

Derridale.

You will love the 18-250.

The Pentax model is made by Tamron. I was informed the only difference is the lens coating and externals.

I use the Tamron and it is amazing. a great walk about lens.
The 6 year warranty helped my decision, plus price and looks.

OK - thanks all All points duly taken on board, and the end result - I'm now the proud owner of a K20D with the Tamron 18-250 lens. I got a good package deal from our local camera superstore - they matched the online price and beat it by a dollar, plus no freight to pay.

I'm going to keep the K10D as a second body, but I'll probably sell my Tamron 18-200 lens that I got when I bought the K10D. Anyone here in Australia care to make an offer I can't refuse?.... Just drop me a line to:

Thanks again to all the team - what a great resource you all are
