iPhoto 7 RAW (DNG) EXIF Data Getting Trashed

I'm having a problem where the EXIF data from my pictures is being lost when I export from iPhoto 7. It happens both when I export to a JPEG and when I upload to Flickr using FlickrExport for iPhoto. It only happens when I try to export RAW (DNG) files.

Here's what I'm using:

Pentax K10D
Mac OS X - v.10.5.2
iPhoto v.7.1.3
FlickrExport 2.0.14

Example of data exported when I shoot as a JPG:

Camera: Pentax K10D

I'm not sure iPhoto is the best option for handling raw photos. Don't get me wrong, I love iPhoto, I just don't think it has the best tools for handling raw. The only reason it handles raw at all is that raw support is built into the OS. I use iPhoto for screenshots and for making calendars and other fun projects. I use Aperture 2 for handling my camera files.

As far as DNG vs jpeg exif, I find that PEF files that go through the DNG converter are quite rich in exif data, but DNG straight from the camera are less detailed in exif. While I am happy that Pentax offers the ability to shoot right to DNG, I don't think they use it to it's fullest potential.

I agree with Dave.... iPhoto may not be the best program to use to extract EXIF data.... I use PhotoME to view exif data and using that, I can see that DNGs have a robust EXIF data section that really needs the proper program to view them.

Here's an example on how much EXIF data is available in a DNG file using PhotoME:

I should have pointed out that I DO see the EXIF data when I look at the RAW photo's properties in iPhoto, it's just when I export it from iPhoto to a JPEG format that the data is lost. So it's not a problem with iPhoto reading EXIF data from a DNG formatted picture, it's an export problem. Can someone who has a similar set up to what I describe above give this a try and let me know if you encounter the same issue?

This looks to be an issue with iPhoto. When I export a DNG file that I did not edit at all from within iPhoto than the EXIF data is retained with no issues. If I first edit the photo and then export it the EXIF data is lost.

Next stop - Apple support.

As I said earlier, iPhoto is not really meant to be a RAW photo application. It offers base level RAW support only because the support for RAW is built into the OS. The editing tools are not nearly as extensive as they are in apps geared more for that purpose. This may be effecting the transfer of exif data to the exported version.

The way iPhoto works with RAW is to make a jpeg copy of the image the very first time you edit it. Every future edit is done to the jpeg copy, not to the original file. This is a good thing because you don't want edits to be applied to the original. The downside is that the jpeg copy is made as small as possible on purpose, so it doesn't take up too much space. iPhoto may be omitting much of the metadata as a means of keeping that copy image small. This would explain why an export of an unedited image retains the exif, because it has not had that jpeg copy made of it.

Conversely, the way most RAW image programs handle non-destructive editing is to store edit info in a separate file, or in a separate part of the original file. When an export is made the original file is referenced and then the edit info applied. The original exif is maintained because the original file is referenced in the export.

Also, if you are going to shoot raw on a regular basis I highly recommend Aperture. A dedicated raw engine that works with the OS support, but offers real raw editing, not edits to a jpeg copy. Far better editing tools. Still integrates with the rest of your Apple apps, including iPhoto. Free trial available.
