What Lens should i rent?

My wife and i just finished booking a vacation rental in kitty hawk North Carolina for august 2013

i'm looking at renting a lens for the trip

here's what i plan on bringing:
k-30
ashai 200mm f4
18-55wr
F 50mm 1.7
maybe m28 2.8

and i might bring my *ist DS with a couple cheaper lens's for the kids to use

will also have my tripod.

i really want something new to play with, and i'm thinking either the DA* 300
or the 15 ltd. Thinking about renting it for 2 weeks, so i have some time to play with it before hand.

shots will more then likely be family, beach( 18-55wr only there) and lighthouses, aquariums ect, So i'm really leaning away from the *300, but i've always wanted to try the 15 or possibly the 35 macro, but thats awfully close to the M28

my dad, who is also coming has a K-X so he can use anything i get also, and i don't think he really has much other then the kit lens and i think the DAL 50-200

I think the difference between the two is obvious - just decide what will give you more fun, going near places and taking ultra wide photos of landscapes, or lurking far and taking tele closeups of wildlife.

A real Pentax family you got there! Seems you will have a blast

oops, yeah 2014 :-)

being that the island is long and skinny, i don't really think there will be too much need for the reach, but darn, i really want to play with it :-)

realistically though, i think either the 15 or 35 macro will be better, any idea how the macro capability is on the 15?

i'm thinking more about small crabs and stuff at the beach, rather then the cell structure of flowers :-)

I always recommend the 12-24 for travel/vacations.

You got enough batteries, Memory cards and such?

I know you're looking to rent, But if you could spring for a Samyang 8mm Ultra Wide Angle f/3.5 Fisheye Lens for Pentax .........

Fisheyes are great for vacations.

And if you're careful with your gear I would not worry too much about WR.

I've got 12 eneloops and the stock battery, more then enough seeing how i can charge every night. also bringing up my laptop, and have a vpn at my house, so i can log into my personal network to back up photos remotely.

one of the reasons i want to rent, is so i can try out a new lens without springing the big bucks to buy one.

If it were me I'd be filling that gap between 55mm and 200mm

You've got the 18-50 range covering anything from close/wide up to standard view.
The pair of primes if you need/want more speed or sharpness.
And the 200 to cover mid-distance.

Being a holiday, I doubt a 300 will be any use to you (unless you want bird shots or something)

I would try to find something in the 70-135 range.

That, then :-) Leave the cap on when not actively shooting.

i don't think i will either, birds aren't really my thing, not that i won't take pictures if i see a neat one, but i don't actively go looking for them. now, if i see a gator though..........

cameralensrentals.com does have the Sigma 8-16 and it's a VERY fun lens.

That said, a nicer superzoom might be more useful.
