I think I need to take up a more expensive hobby for a while so that my wife will be happy for me to just say, "maybe I will stop _____ and focus on photography."

I paid more for the wires in my stereo than I did for the K-3/18-135. :-)

Hopefully after this initial expenditure I've got pretty much everything I need.

Not in my experience. I've spent a fair amount on fly fishing over the years but nothing like what I've spent on photography. Of course, I don't do fly-in trips to Alaska or Kamchatka.

At this point in time, photography is on par with money being dropped into my mountain bike, but for how long is the million dollar question

Not yet. I have spent more on astronomy tools, but things are about to change.

What is the focal length of that kayak?
5000mm give or take. 50 pounds. Will SR allow handheld use?

Serious audiophiles pay serious bank for primo quality. My husband considers $250 PC speakers to be cheap speakers. I think $20 PC speakers are expensive. He also thinks he needs a sound card. I'm fine with onboard sound from the motherboard. Fortunately for our budget, he's not too serious about pursuing audio gear. But he has a car habit... We presently own 5 vehicles and 7 engines...

His car habit expense rivals my Disney habit expense.

Photography is definitely my most expensive hobby at the moment, but archery was number one a few years ago, and rock climbing before that. With all three, getting fully kitted up costs a fair bit but then it levels off dramatically.

It must be time for me to move onto something new

I have a Telecaster and a THD amplifier that outweigh the camera gear all by themselves. Amateur radio gear was a wallet-killer when I had room for antennas. When I was married, we lived a bon vivant lifestyle in Hollywood and traveled a lot. THAT was expensive. If the photography gear ever finds a way to pay for itself, it won't be a hobby anymore.

No, photography is not my most expensive hobby. I've been able to turn it in something that earns me a nice buck. But even when it was still a hobby only, it wasn't the most expensive. My 600ltr reef aquarium earns that trophy. I've spent more on salts then on my K-3. It's filled with SPS and LPS stony corals, softies, sponges, clams and fish of course. I've been applying several successful transformations to get the costs back down again, but still. It's a collection and there's always the ugliest coral that can be replaced by something prettier.

It certainly is my most expensive hobby. Sometimes I feel it's too much. If I were to start from scratch I would probably go with m43 format to keep the expenses down while not sacrificing output.

You've got to be kidding, right?

One time someone tried to make me hear the difference between gold plated and standard wires. Who knew the destroyed hair cells in my cochlea would eventually save me so much money? I need to thank my old 90'tees walkman for that.
