No not photography, Kites.

Hard to believe, but walked into kite shop 14 years ago and said" $125 for a kite, you gotta be crazy." Well now 14 years later I have invested approx. $30,000 in kites. Wonderful hobby with wonderful people. I get to put a lot of smiles on peoples faces aged 3 to 93. I have been more than paid back. I know sounds nutsy, but true.

Of course you understand that no 2nd home, no motorhome, no boat, no college to pay now, and all kids married.

Life is good!!!!! Just retired end of 2013. Now spending more time with photography. I have been blessed.

Thanks,

Larry

But net cost of the ridiculously expensive and obscenely time consuming items? My guess is that likely your wife would make more selling her chairs than you selling your old cameras?
First, she'll never sell them. They're all designated to children. And since I'll never buy a K3 she'll never read this thread, but Shhhhhhh . . . . . don't say such things. And the children are just starting to show some interest in the cameras.

My most expensive hobby is making music I guess.
Owning a couple of electric guitars and 2 acoustics, a couple of amplifiers, one bass guitar, a powerful laptop for recording, audio interfaces, and don't even get me started on the millions of cables and microphones...

I see a nice guitar for 800 - I buy it.
I see a nice lens for 800 - I think " no, that's too expensive".

The kites look cool, and very large. Are you never tempted to strap a camera to them and let it point down to the ground on interval shoot, just to see what the pictures look like?

Kaption

Tim,
Kaption is a separate interest in kiting where you do take a camera up with a kite. The camera controlled from the ground with special equipment. You get some fantastic photos. I am more into show kites, banners, and 4-line stunt kites. There are many areas of kiting to get into.

It can be cheaper than many

.

A lot of hobbies can get out of hand more quickly than photography!

I've spent a bit on photography since 2007, but I have friends and relatives who have spent more than me on stuff like the above! (the cool thing is I can just borrow their stuff )

No canoeing is, I own maybe 7 or 8 cameras , I own 10 canoes average price somewhere around $1400. When tripping in the Park it costs me $25 a day just to be there. One trip can cost $400.

My most expensive hobby is windsurfing. Two boards, seven sails, three masts, lots of stuff plus three week long trips to Cape Hatteras and two to Aruba. I could have purchased my entire photo kit with one of the excursions. Never regretted one minute on the board with a 4.2 square meter hanky in twenty knot breeze.
