New firmware available

Pentax has released new firmware.

Also note that updates to the Pentax Photobrowser versions 2 and 3 are available. These updates adds the names of the most recent Pentax lenses to the display of EXIF data.

I'm a bit wary on loading the new firmware since many people seem to be having problems, ie. camera not functioning after the update. I think I'll just wait - not like I'll be using larger SD cards anyways

When upgrading its always the best policy to not do it unless you need the added features, since complicatons are always a risk in any upgrade. Im not upgrading my K100D because I dont need to use the high capacity SD cards.

Which f/w do I have

How can I tell which firmware version is in the camera (DL)? I expected to find something looking through the camera menus, but am not seeing it.

I don't plan to use the high density memory cards, but am curious whether any other changes might appear if I do the upgrade. For instance I think I read in a review of the identical Samsung GX-1L that its firmware allows more after-the-fact adjustment options of pictures that were taken in jpeg mode.

On the DS, if you hold down the MENU button while turning the camera on, the display will show the firmware version. Probably the same procedure for the DL.

Is this just to upgrade to the newest memory cards? If so I will wait until I actually buy one for my Ds.

Yes, firmware update version 2.01 is to add support for SDHC memory cards. For now, I would stick with version 2.00 unless you really need the SDHC support.

Thanks Toshi.

I normally upgrade my firmware to keep my cameras up to date. Since I have no requirement for SDHC cards right now I am going to wait.

I've just updated my Ds no problem. Just follow the instructions. When it says "complete" don't open the card door, which I believe someone did and stuffed their camera, turn the camera off.

I've updated firmware yesterday and focus seems to decide faster. No more stuttering/fine tunning.

Just upgraded mine and it's fine, as far as things devices do when you brick them or flash them wrong.
Does anyone know what SDHC class the K100 is capable of?

Hence, the reason keeping your firmware updated is indeed important.
While I fully understand the approach of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" I also believe that in most cases, the firmware has more fixes in it than just what they put in the press releases. You typically have to read the "readme" files contained in the download to have a complete understanding of all changes that have been made ... only then can you make an intellegent decision as to whether the update is worth the risk that always exists in such updates.

cheers ...
