In the K-30 this issue is not solvable in firmware - it is a mechanical limitation. (same for K-50 and K-500 which are essentially the same camera)

The way the mechanism is constructed the only way the shutter can be primed is by lowering the mirror. The mechanism that primes the shutter is the same one that lowers the mirror.
It has been like this for a while in Pentax cameras. They're cheaper models (K-x, K-30, K-50) use simpler version of mirror box with one motor that controls three things: shutter, aperture and mirror. So to take image in LV, the mirror needs to flop. Another consequence of this that annoyed me even more - if you use optical preview on these cameras, mirror will also flip up and down when you release the button. It has to, there's no other way how to open the aperture again. This is funny when I take picture of someone and use optical preview since with the mirror noise - they think the picture is already taken and turn away.

More advanced cameras use multiple separate motors - not sure about K-5, but K-3 has three motors, so its optical preview is very silent and even taking picture in LV can be used as quieter alternative to taking picture via viewfinder.

If Ricoh, Canon, and Nikon want to compete against mirrorless cameras with DSLRs, they need their DSLRs to operate in mirrorless mode and have 0 performance drawbacks vs. MILC competitors.

It's not at all clear to me why the K-3 should have the 1 minute limitation. I can understand a limit on live view due to sensor over heating but in mirror lockup the sensor is not operating so that shouldn't be an issue. Maybe it could be some hold down solenoid that needs to stay energised to hold the mirror open, but I would think that with the mirror's independent motor that would not be needed.

Maybe it is by design because someone thought we might forget the mirror in the up position? In that case it would have been better to make it an option, just like the auto power off.

One of the knobs on the 645D 2014 that they were showing at CP+ was for MLU. Maybe the engineers at ricoh will apply some of the lessons they learn there to the mass market APS-C cameras.

I totally agree with this.
Even they should do this on the lower end DSLRs because people who use LCD for shooting mostly buy those products.

The mirror flop during live view was annoying in the K-x and K-30. The video in the K-S1 seems to show that this problem was fixed. Can anyone with a K-S1 verify? How about a K-S2?
