AF Area Test in K10D Debug Mode

Hi guys,

I've just received my DA* 16-50 3 days ago. Initial testing on my K10D shows that it BF quite a bit at the wide end. So I decided to downgrade my firmware from 1.3 to 1.1 just to adjust the AF.

In the Debug mode, AF Test menu, there are AF Area Test and Focus Corr. I used AF Area Test =0 and Focus Corr = +40 to correct my BF issues. Since AF area test has values from 0-3, it got me thinking.... maybe thats for 4 lens? or 4 focus area?

I have read in various forum post that Pentax service center can store up to 4 lens AF adjustment on the K10D. Then the AF area test has 4 values too. Maybe they are the same thing?

I also realise K100D debug menu also has 4 values for the AF area test.

Anyone has any experience?

Mike

rant/ There have been numerous threads on this topic in the Forums. Use of the "Search" feature would come in handy before adding new posts when dealing with "how to" questions, as you'd probably get your solutions much sooner that way. /rant

OK, now for the (hopefully) helpful part:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/18498-two-ways-adjust-focus.html (start at post #6)
and, just in case you need to go back to firmware v. 1.1 to get access to the debug menu: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/25001-k10d-so-debu...adjust-af.html

Lotsa luck with your focus tweaks!

wow, those links were a complete waste of my time clicking. I've read them repeatedly prior to your "help" and none answered the question above.

This thing really works! I've been completely frustrated with the AF on my 77 and 31mm ltd primes. Now they focus perfectly even at 1.8 Needless to say this was a great thing...thanks to those responsible for writing this program.

BTW- my DA lenses are focusing better as well.

There is no need to use a special program or to downgrade firmware in order to enter the debug mode on k10d. It is enough to place a text file MODSET.txt containing only one line of text [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU] in the root of your SD card. Donīt forget to place a line break in the end of this line, or it will not work.

K10D Firmware 1.31 debug mode to rectify back/front focusing

After some Googling, I've found this excellent and simple method by Ivan Glisin:

No need for 1.30. Do the following with 1.31:

In the root directory of your memory card create or copy a text file named

MODSET.TXT

with only one line in it:

[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]

After inserting card back to the camera, to enable debug mode do the following:

1. Switch camera off.
2. Open card door and leave it open.
3. Switch camera on -- debug menu shows up.
4. Close card door.
5. Left/right to enable debug mode.
6. Press OK to confirm.
7. Go to Set-Up menu, go to the end and Set-up will change to TEST MODE menu, AF TEST option is there with Focus Corr inside.

To disable debug mode:

1. Switch camera off.
2. Open card door and leave it open.
3. Switch camera on -- debug menu shows up.
4. Close card door.
5. Left/right to disable debug mode.
6. Press OK.

Note: you can permanently leave MODSET.TXT file on your card.
